The National at Williamsburg Apple Store

The National are celebrating the release of their acclaimed new album Sleep Well Beast with special events all week. They played the whole album in full for NPR’s “First Listen Live” in Philadelphia on Tuesday (9/5), and on Wednesday (9/6) played a free, low-key set at Williamsburg’s The Apple Store (formerly The Bagel Store). “We were handsome there,” joked singer Matt Berninger of the giant press photo of the band displayed on the store’s massive display screen behind them. It wasn’t so much acoustic, as toned down — everyone was plugged in. They had brass and additional instrumentation with them as well. They played half of Sleep Well Beast, ending things with the cinematic “Guilty Party.” Check out the setlist and a few videos below.

The National will perform on Colbert tonight (9/7). On Friday (9/8), they’ll play the new album in its entirety at Bowery Ballroom (sold out), and then on their fall tour includes a much larger NYC show on October 6 at Forest Hills Stadium with DaughterTickets for Forest Hills are on still available (we’re also giving away a pair).
