The National frontman Matt Berninger has been teasing his debut solo album Serpentine Prison for a while now, and he's performed some songs from it live, and today he finally released the album's first single: its title track. It's a classic-sounding Matt Berninger song (with a reference to Big Star's cover of "Don't Worry Baby") but a little earthier and more stripped-back than the music The National usually makes. It's a very promising first taste of the album, and you can hear it below.

Serpentine Prison is due out on October 2 via Book Records, a new imprint from Berninger and Booker T. Jones, who produced the album, in conjunction with Concord. Stay tuned for more details.
