The Roots streaming benefit for Philly, Questlove potluck & more
The Roots have announced that they are producing a special livestream in support of the PHL COVID-19 Fund, that will air on May 21st at 7 PM ET. The broadcast will feature appearances from performers with ties to Philadelphia, including Daryl Hall, Patti LaBelle, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Amos Lee, DJ Diamond Kuts and friends, Wallo267, Jeffrey Gaines, Jay Buchanan (of Rival Sons), and more.
As noted via the PHL COVID-Fund's website, "The variety show will celebrate the talent and resilience of the Greater Philadelphia region as it raises awareness and support for the PHL-COVID Fund." The fund aims to support people who have been hit hardest by the coronavirus pandemic.
Local residents can watch on 6ABC, CBS3, and NBC10 and it will also be streamed on The Roots YouTube channel.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, The Roots also appeared at a drive-in concert called "Drive-InFieldFest" with DJ D-Nice, to support first responders who are working tirelessly throughout the country during this crisis. It streamed on YouTube, and raised money for First Responders Children's Foundation, which provides support and vital supplies for first responders and families who are enduring financial hardship due to the pandemic. You can rewatch the stream below and donate here.
Questlove has another upcoming charity event of his own, Questlove's Potluck, which airs on May 28th from 10-11 PM ET on Food Network. The potluck will feature a variety of guests, each sheltering in place in their own homes. Each guest -— including Bun. B, Hannibal Buress, Zooey Deschanel, Jonathan Scott, Ashley Graham, Tiffany Haddish, Patti LaBelle, Eva Longoria, George Lopez, Kenan Thompson, Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter, Gabrielle Union, Olivia Wilde, Roy Wood Jr., and many more -- will be cooking, sharing, and eating some of their favorite dishes and drinks.
The evening also has a philanthropic intention; it supports America's Food Fund, the fundraising initiative launched by Leonardo Dicaprio and Laurene Powell Jobs, which works with several organizations including Feeding America, World Central Kitchen, and No Kid Hungry in order to help ensure that food is available to the many communities dealing with hunger.
On the potluck, Questlove said:
Bringing together friends, collaborators, and those who I admire around food is something I love to do. When I can bring people together around a cause that I care deeply about, it's even more meaningful [...] I hope everyone will join me and my friends, for a night of food, drink, and laughter in supporting this incredible organization, and having some fun while we’re at it!
The Roots' YouTube Channel is also updated each week with new stuff from the group, including new episodes of Questlove's regular series, "DJ Questlove Presents," which take place at 6 PM ET (they're also on his Instagram); his podcast series, "Questlove Supreme;" "The Roots Present Live from the Archives;" and more.
