The The releasing ‘Radio Cineola’ box set, announce first live shows in 16 years
Matt Johnson returned to The The this year to release "We Can't Stop What's Coming," the first new music under that name in 15 years, as a Record Store Day 2017 single. That will be part of a three-disc box set centered around Johnson's Radio Cineola web broadcast he has hosted over the last few years. Radio Cineola: The Trilogy includes a disc of other artists covering The The songs as well as the new single; another disc of Matt Johnson reading John Tottenham’s epic poetic cycle "The Inertia Variations"; and the third collects interviews and soundscapes taken from Johnson’s 12-hour UK Election Day Radio Cineola shortwave broadcast from 2015. Guests on the box set include JG Thirwell, Thomas Leer, Johnny Marr, James Eller, Anna Domino, Zeke Manyika, and more. It's out October 20 and you can check out the tracklist, as well watch the album trailer and the "We Can't Stop What's Coming" video, below.
There is also a documentary made about Johnson titled The Inertia Variations directed by Johanna St Michaels:
The 84-minute documentary, inspired by the poem of the same name by British-born, Los Angeles based poet John Tottenham, is centered around the Radio Cineola broadcast and within the film, through recitations of John Tottenham’s poetry, Matt Johnson examines his sometimes troubled relationship with celebrity and the creative process and, through the tragic deaths of his mother and two of his brothers, how bereavement has informed his work and outlook.
The film premiered at the Gothenburg Film Festival earlier this year and will be out in theaters in the UK on October 20, the same day as Radio Cineola: The Trilogy. You can watch a trailer for the film below.
Last but not least, The The have just announced their first live shows in 16 years: June 1 at Heartland Festival in Denmark, and June 5 at Royal Albert Hall in London. Tickets for Heartland Festival are on sale now (9/11) and tickets to the London show go on sale Friday, September 15 at 10 AM UK time. No word on who will be in the band, but let's hope there are more shows to be announced.
