Young Friends

Another reason to go to tonight’s Newtown Radio-sponsored Tortilla’s on the Creek show, 10/29, at Los Hermanos Tortilleria in Bushwick: former Arizona residents The Young Friends who just a couple weeks ago moved to Brooklyn. They headline the show tonight, going on around 12:30.

The Young Friends were, for me, the surprise hit of this year’s NYC Popfest where they played an early afternoon set on the final day at Littlefield. Manic, bouncy and tuneful (and just out of high school), they sound to me like a cross between Orange Juice, Haircut One Hundred and The Drums. (Holiday Records, run in part by Jacob of The Drums, released YF’s first single.) A four-piece when they played Littlefield, the new Brooklyn-ized version of the band is a trio.

You can download “Make Out Point” at the top of this post and watch the video (directed by Shirley of the much-missed NY Noise) at the bottom of this post. You can also listen the entirety of their first record, Hella, via a widget below.

Tonight’s show also has Roanoke Virginia’s great Eternal Summers, Total Slacker offshoot Web Dating, Miracles, Jump Into the Gospel, plus Connor from The Drums will DJ between sets. $10.
