Thrice sign to Epitaph, release "The Grey," touring with The Bronx

Thrice returned from hiatus in 2015 and proved that their live shows are still super powerful and then released a new album, 2016’s To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere. Now they’ve signed to Epitaph Records, who have been killing it for the last few years and have signed a bunch of great newer bands that are probably influenced by Thrice (like Touche Amore and Pianos Become the Teeth). Classic Epitaph bands were also always an influence on Thrice, making the new pairing even more apt. Thrice said in a statement: “We grew up listening to and being inspired by Epitaph bands, and have always admired and respected the label’s independent spirit and ethics. To finally be a part of the family there is an absolute honor, and we couldn’t be more excited about our future with them.”

Along with the signing, Thrice released a new song, “The Grey,” and I’m not sure if I’m seeing this through rose-colored glasses a bit just because Epitaph’s current-day style and Thrice’s classic style have so much in common, but “The Grey” sounds a lot more like classic Thrice to me than To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere did. It’s a sludgy yet melodic crusher that sounds somewhere between The Artist in the Ambulance and the Fire EP. They mentioned earlier this year that they’ve been working on a new album, so if the rest of it is anything like “The Grey,” this album is looking pretty promising. Listen below.

Thrice also announced a fall tour with The Bronx and Teenage Wrist that hits Austin, Philly, Boston, Chicago, LA and more. They’ll be in the NYC-area sooner for day one (July 12) of Long Island’s Great South Bay Music Fest, which is with folky pop punks The Front Bottoms, emo vets The Get Up Kids, and more (tickets). All dates are listed below.
