Thurston Moore & John Zorn playing Rough Trade 40th Anniversary show in NYC
Record shop chain Rough Trade turns 40 this year and having been hosting special collaborative concerts in celebration. All of them have been in the UK but they've just announced one for the NYC store happening November 23 between Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and fellow downtown scene vet John Zorn. Tickets for that go on sale Wednesday (11/2) at noon.
The concert is also "in collaboration with Ecstatic Peace Library to launch the new facsimile edition of the complete print run of MUSICS edited by David Toop and Steve Beresford." What is Musics? From the Ecstatic Peace Library:
Musics: A British Magazine of Improvised Music & Art
From 1975 to 1979, London improvisers published the most innovative artists and musicians of their generation in the magazine Musics. Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, John Zorn, David Toop, John Russell, The Feminist Improvising Group, Bob Cobbing, ICP, Martin Davidson, Madelaine Davidson, Annabel Nicholson, Han Bennink, Eddie Prevost, David Cunningham, Steve Beresford among many, many, many others were contributors. After forty years these journals are available in a complete facsimile bound edition.
Elsewhere in the Sonic Youth universe: Kim Gordon is touring and releasing a new album with Body/Head, who hit NYC on November 12 at National Sawdust (tickets). Meanwhile, Lee Ranaldo is currently touring Europe, and drummer Steve Shelley is currently on the road with Sun Kil Moon.
Meanwhile, John Zorn's venue The Stone always has lots of cool experimental, improvisational shows going on, some of which we rounded up (along with other No Wave goings on).
That roundup also included mention of an upcoming Bardo Pond/Galacto show, and while Thurston is a member of Galacto, he won't be at that show.
