Tinariwen associates Imarhan on tour, streaming new LP
Algerian Tuareg band Imarhan have been described as Tinariwen‘s proteges, and their frontman Sadam has toured as a member of Tinariwen. They were supposed to play Austin’s Levitation fest this past weekend, but that was cancelled and instead they played one of the festival’s last-minute makeup shows on Friday (5/29).
Their tour continues, hitting NYC for two shows this weekend: Saturday (5/7) at Le Poisson Rouge with The Britanys and Invisible Familiars and then Sunday (5/8) at Baby’s All Right with Ancient Ocean. Tickets for both shows are on sale now. All dates are listed below.
Their tour is in support of their debut self-titled album, which came out on the same day as their Austin show. Here’s some of what Drowned In Sound had to say about it:
Tuareg legends Tinariwen – who are Imarhan’s musical elders – look great on a Glastonbury stage in their robes with a Greenpeace sign beneath their feet. In contrast, Imarhan are a band who prefer leather jackets and jeans. Visually they’re much more a representation of what the Tuareg city of Tamanrasset – which is their southern Algerian hometown – is actually like now. It’s a bustling city with internet, a tight-knit music scene and the rest of it. They’re not obscuring how penetrative modernity is, they’re embodying how traditional music and culture has changed as a consequence of it.
