During the past ten years, Tool have played a couple of shows in the area - Izod Center in 2012 and All Points West in 2009, both in NJ - but the band's last shows in NYC proper were a pair of nights at New York City Center in May of 2006. That changed Sunday night (6/4), when Tool headlined the final night of Governors Ball, returning to NYC after over a decade away. It was noted at the recent Relix Live Music Conference that GovBall was taking a risk booking Tool at all, since many attendees are too young to have seen them live before and their music isn't easily available to stream on places like Spotify. While it's true that Tool fans stood out as a different demographic than the mostly younger crowd that packed GovBall on Friday and Saturday, Tool shirts were everywhere in the crowd on Sunday, just like at Boston Calling.
The Governors Ball show was part of Tool's North American tour, which winds up with a big California show on June 24 with Melvins, Primus, The Crystal Method, Clutch and Fantômas. Earlier in this tour, at Hershey, PA's Giant Center, Tool played "Eulogy" live for the first time in 16 years. They didn't play it at GovBall, though, nor at any show since PA. Tool's GovBall show also didn't include new material, as had been rumored and hoped for among fans, but it did end with fireworks (watch that below). Find Tool's GovBall setlist below, along with some video clips of their performance. Photos are in the gallery above.
