Tormentor

Tormentor (Attila Csihar, etc) are back, playing first US reunion show at Maryland Deathfest

Tormentor, the Hungarian black metal band that the legendary Attila Csihar fronted before going on to become the vocalist on Mayhem’s classic De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas and make albums with Sunn O))) and tons of other projects, reunited this year with the classic lineup of Attila Csihar, Tamás Buday, Attila Szigeti, György Farkas, and Zsolt Machat for their first shows since the 1990s. Their return was revealed when they were announced for Norway’s Beyond The Gates festival, who wrote:

Formed in Budapest in 1986, Tormentor is truly one of the most unique acts ever to emerge from the extreme metal scene. Their brilliant blend of harsh riffs, the guttural voice of Attila Csihar and the sometimes refined passages really made them stand out to the ones discovering them.

The iconic debut album, “Anno Domini” together with the demo “Seventh Day of Doom” is widely regarded as one of the most influential releases in black metal. The debut was recorded in 1988, but due to the communist regime, it took years to formally release it.
“Anno Domini” made a huge impact on the 2nd wave of black metal bands surfacing at the end of the 80s, the Norwegian scene in particular.
After Tormentor’s early demise in 1991 the bands charismatic singer, Attila, joined Mayhem in time to record the black metal milestone, “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”.

Over time, the legend has grown and their cult status continued to gain momentum. Now they’re back to obliterate. Tormentor’s musical legacy can firmly be placed amongst other pioneering acts such as Bathory, Sarcofago and Celtic Frost.

The sometimes theatrical songs lends themselves perfectly to the live stage and knowing the capabilities of this highly skilled bunch of musicians, this show will be something very, very special.

Tormentor have so far only played shows and festivals in Europe, but they’re now set to make an exclusive U.S. appearance at Maryland Deathfest 2019. They were just added to the lineup, along with Florida death metal vets Deicide.

They join such previously announced bands as Voivod, Anaal Nathrakh, Primitive Man, Spectral Voice, Borknagar, Unleashed, Benediction, Total Fucking Destruction, Bethlehem, Cro-Mags, D.R.I., Full of Hell, Immolation, Indian, Scour, The Chasm, Tomb Mold, and more; and there are still two more bands TBA for the Thursday show at Rams Head. Check out the updated day-by-day lineup for MDF 2019 below. Tickets are still available.

MDF isn’t just Tormentor’s first US reunion show but their first ever US show. “We never played out of Hungary back in the days, “Attila told Touch of Evil. Here’s more:

Anno Domini is going to be 30 years old in 2018. We’re so excited, the idea of doing a 30th-anniversary reunion show came and gone many times over the years. Next year is the right time, we said yes to this offer. Probably we’re going to do a few more shows, but just a few, we don’t want to play much more. We’re doing this for the fans, for the music, for the old guys. We never played out of Hungary back in the days, the people and the fans deserve to hear this music live once in a lifetime. I think it’s interesting, next year Mayhem will be calmer because we toured a lot this year. It looks like it’s the right constellation.
