Tortoise's Jeff Parker announces new album, shares song, playing shows
Jeff Parker has been in Tortoise since the ’90s, and he’s also an acclaimed jazz musician and just announced a new solo album, Suite for Max Brown, due January 24 via International Anthem/Nonesuch. It follows 2016’s The New Breed, which Jeff says “became a kind of tribute to my father who passed away while I was making [it],” and the new album is named after and dedicated to his mother (who’s pictured on the cover at age 19). “I thought it would be nice this time to dedicate something to my mom while she’s still here to see it.” It features nine new original songs, plus “Gnarciss,” an interpretation of Joe Henderson’s “Black Narcissus,” and a version of John Coltrane’s “After the Rain.” The first single is the groovy, kinetic “Go Away,” which you can hear below.
Jeff is also playing Big Ears Festival and some other tour dates beforehand, including one at NYC’s Le Poisson Rouge on March 11 (tickets). All dates are listed below.
