Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross are in demand film composers these days, usually working on more serious, darker films, like whatever David Fincher is directing or hit Netfilx thriller Birdbox. They’ve been tapped for something much lighter, but with a music-related premise: Pixar’s new jazz-themed feature, Soul. The film, from director Pete Docter (Up, Inside Out), features the voice talents of Questlove, Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Daveed Diggs (of clipping. and Hamilton), and Phylicia Rashad. Foxx plays a middle school band teacher who loves jazz and dreams of playing NYC’s Blue Note but accidentally finds himself in the cosmic realm where souls are perfected and installed in humans before being sent to earth. In addition to Reznor and Ross’ score, the film will also feature new jazz music from Jon Batiste. Soul is due out June 19, 2020.

In more typical Reznor/Ross territory, the duo will score the upcoming HBO adaptation of Watchmen which is out in October.
