Tragedy struck SXSW tonight as two people were killed and many more seriously injured when a car plowed into a crowd of people outside club Mohawk on Red River and 9th St. in Austin:

Austin Police Lt. Brian Moon said the driver — who has since been taken into custody — crashed through temporary barricades.

“The driver continued to drive after crashing through the barricades and hit numerous pedestrians before the vehicle stopped,” Moon told ABC News Radio.

The accident happened at Red River Street and East 10th Street, near several clubs. Photos taken at the scene show victims laying in the street, with emergency vehicles responding. The Austin-Travis County EMS also responded to the accident, according to ABC affiliate KVUE. – [ABC]

Just terrible. The accident happened just a few blocks from Red 7 where BrooklynVegan had its official SXSW showcase this evening. No word on what this may mean for the rest of the festival yet.
