Ty Segall shares a cappella song "Ice Plant" from new LP

We’re used to Ty Segall rocking out and we’ve even seen his softer, sleepier side but there’s almost always some guitar involved. That’s what makes “Ice Plant,” from Ty’s forthcoming First Taste, so unusual. Not only is there no guitar, there’s also no bass, drums or any instrumentation at all, just him and layers of vocal harmonies (some of which are provided by Shannon Lay). “‘Ice Plant’ is a fever dream reflection of my childhood,” says Ty. “A past no more. Was very fun to sing with the amazing Shannon Lay. My neighborhood in Laguna Beach was and still is covered in Ice Plants and Eucalyptus trees that would fall on our family’s car and stain the paint job. One winter we tried to surf down the Ice Plant hills.” Listen below.

First Taste is out next week and Ty Segall & The Freedom Band have extended residencies in Los Angeles, Brooklyn and London where he’s playing albums from his catalog in full as well as First Taste in full. The Brooklyn shows, which are at Warsaw, are with LA garage-punk trio Lamps (10/1), frequent Ty collaborators White Fence (10/2), and Japanese mind-blowers DMBQ (10/3-10/5). Five-day passes are sold out but you can still get tickets to all the individual shows.
