Unknown Mortal Orchestra‘s new album, Sex & Food, dives into ’70s funk and soul, filtered through Ruban Nielson’s underwater sonic filters. The band’s stage set up for the album’s tour is of a similar vibe, made to look like a groovy 1970s living room, complete with funky furniture and a shag rug. Live, songs from Sex & Food come off much bigger and more fleshed out, with Ruban and the rest of the band aiming for the bleachers. At the second of UMO’s two shows at Brooklyn Steel (4/26), Ruban went into the bleachers, so to speak, jumping into the crowd, walked all the way to the back of the room, made his way upstairs to the balcony and then back down, all while still playing.

Pictures from night 2, including ones of UMO’s tourmates Makeness, are in the gallery above, and the setilst is below.
