Vera Sola is the musical moniker of Danielle Aykroyd, who has a few acting credits dating back to her childhood and who has spent years playing in Elvis Perkins' band. Yes, if her last name didn't give it away, she is the daughter of Dan Aykroyd and Donna Dixon, and her Vera Sola moniker is partially to distance herself from that "to be taken on the merit of my music and my own personality and my own self," she says. And she certainly deserves to be taken seriously as a musician. Last year, she released a dark, folky EP of Misfits covers that really put a fresh twist on those classic songs, and now she's gearing up to release her debut solo album Shades next week (11/9) via Spectraphonic Records (pre-order).

Her originals are also in that dark, quiet, folky realm that fans of Marissa Nadler will probably dig, and she's already got a co-sign by Zola Jesus, who recently remixed her song "The Colony." We're premiering the new song "The Cage" ahead of the album's release, along with its video, and here's what Vera Sola tells us about it:

On the surface, "The Cage" is a retelling of the second book of Genesis. It’s sung from Eve’s perspective, till about 3/4 of the way through the song when it switches to the voice of God. Since it’s about biblical “first woman, second person” it’s by extension the story of any femme-identifying individual living in a patriarchal society. It wasn’t till I’d been singing it a while that I realized it was also a uniquely personal reckoning with my own sense of self and identity. Not just as a woman, but as a person who’s spent their life in the long shadow of who and what I came from.

The video is a collage of imagery evoked by the above. I borrowed an affectionate 6 foot boa constrictor from a friend, danced with ire in the shadows and fit my whole body into my mother’s old birdcage. (No one believed I could do it, but I won that bet.) Subtle. I know. So it goes.

Check out "The Cage" and its video, alongside streams of previous singles "Small Minds" and "The Colony," and the Zola Jesus remix of "The Colony," below.

Vera Sola recently toured with Rodriguez and she has more dates coming up this fall, including a Brooklyn show on December 3 at Rough Trade. That's a free, all ages show that starts at 8 PM and includes a signing after the set. More info here. All dates are listed below.
