watch a documentary about NYC DIY venues

DIY venues were instrumental in the NYC/Brooklyn music scene of the last 15 years, though with the real estate boom of the  last 10 years — not to mention the wake of Oakland’s Ghost Ship tragedy — it has been harder and harder for them to stay open. Rolling Stone looks at the scene, past and present, in a new documentary short titled “DIY in NYC: Why Music Venues Often Go Underground” which features interviews with Todd P and City Councilman Rafael Espinal (who spearheaded the Night Mayor bill), Beach Fossils, Greta Kline of Frankie Cosmos, Adam Reich of Silent Barn and more. You can watch the whole thing below.

NYC just named its first Night Mayor.
