watch Jeff Tweedy & Kevin Morby cover John Prine (separately)
We sadly lost legendary songwriter John Prine due to coronavirus complications on Tuesday (4/8). Tributes from his fellow musicians have been pouring in, including from Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy, who used his his nightly “The Tweedy Show” Instagram livestream to pay tribute to Prine, like he did in late March during Prine’s hospitalization. Tweedy covered multiple songs, including “Please Don’t Bury Me,” which he wrapped up by saying, “probably a little bit inappropriate but celebratory as well, I hope,” and “Summer’s End.” You can watch video of “Please Don’t Bury Me” below, and see some tweets from people who watched the stream.
Other musicians have covering Prine’s material more in the past couple of weeks, too, as news broke of John’s battle with COVID-19, including Joan Baez, The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy, and Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker. Kevin Morby also did a cover of “Angel from Montgomery” during one of his livestreams with Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield, and you can watch that below as well.
