watch members of Can (and Sonic Youth & MBV) reunite for 50th anniversary

For Can‘s 50th anniversary, founding member Irmin Schmidt and original vocalist Malcolm Mooney are reunited for at least two shows as The Can Project. The first was Saturday night (4/8) at Barbican Hall in London. As announced, Irmin and Malcom were joined by Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, and the London Symphony Orchestra. The set also ended up including Deb Googe of My Bloody Valentine (who also plays with Thurston and Steve in the Thurston Moore Group). The show was also set to include drummer Jaki Liebezeit, but he sadly passed away in January. Here’s an excerpt of The Guardian‘s review of the show:

After an interval foyer screening of a mostly inaudible 1972 Can live show, Moore then led an octet including Can’s first vocal-ranter Malcolm Mooney. Landmark tracks such as Outside My Door emerged from percussion whispers and glowing electronica into thunderous double-drums grooving; a sly Hammond vamp introduced She Brings the Rain; Yoo Doo Right was an ecstatic group jam. The soundscape was fittingly rich, though the set’s intended drummer – Can legend Jaki Liebezeit, who died in January – was sorely missed.

Video of the show has surfaced, including one of the entire 14-minute “Yoo Doo Right.” Check it out below.

The Can Project’s next scheduled show is Glastonbury.

Malcom Mooney will be in in NYC for a show on April 14 at Rough Trade with BKLYN, Bana Haffar, and Rodent (tickets).

The Thurston Moore Group are releasing a new album and touring this year, including a Brooklyn show on May 20 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (tickets).

In other news Mute Records is releasing Can – The Singles on June 16 which is the first-ever compilation of its kind and includes best-known songs “Halleluwah,” “Vitamin C” and “I Want More” as well as more obscure singles such as “Silent Night” and “Turtles Have Short Legs.” Pre-order is available and artowrk and tracklist are below.
