Mountain Goats Erik Rutan

watch Mountain Goats play "Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton" with Hate Eternal's Erik Rutan

The Mountain Goats are on tour now, and at their Ybor City, FL show at The Orpheum on Saturday (9/1), they played their classic All Hail West Texas opener “The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton” with help from an actual death metal musician: Erik Rutan (of Hate Eternal, Ripping Corpse, Morbid Angel, and more). Eric soloed throughout the song, and when frontman (and huge metal fan) John Darnielle got to the line about the best ever death metal band out of Denton never settling on a name, he changed out “The Killers” for “Ripping Corpse.” A fan posted a video of the full song on Twitter, and Darnielle commented on it, saying, “here’s the entire “Best Ever Death Metal Band” with Erik Rutan from @haeteternal soloing & completely making my LIFE in Tampa. His drop-in at the line about the school just wrecks me & the whole thing just rules.” Watch below. Erik also joined The Mountain Goats for “Autoclave,” after which Darnielle commented: “personal life peak.” You can watch a clip of that one below too.

The Mountain Goats, who recently released a Bon Iver cover, continue their tour in Oxford, MS tonight (9/4), and John Darnielle will be in NYC for ‘Selected Shorts’ at Symphony Space on October 24 (tickets).

Hate Eternal are gearing up to release their new album Upon Desolate Sands on October 26 via Season of Mist, and after that, they’ll tour with Cannibal Corpse and Harms Way, including a Jersey City show on 11/9 at White Eagle Hall (tickets).
