watch SNL tackle the ‘Blue/Pinkerton’ vs “new Weezer” debate
Last night (12/15) was the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live with Matt Damon as host and Miley Cyrus and Mark Ronson as musical guests, and one unexpected skit that music nerds will appreciate revolved around an argument between Matt Damon and Leslie Jones about what Weezer's best music really is.
Three neighboring couples are having dinner, when Weezer's cover of "Africa" starts playing. "You haven't heard this yet? This is Weezer's cover of 'Africa!'," says Matt Damon when Heidi Gardner and Cecily Strong aren't sure what song is on. Beck Bennett's reply: "Weezer... I didn't even know they were still a band." Then Leslie Jones chimes in, "So you're a Weezer fan?" And over the course of the next three minutes, Leslie and Matt get into exactly the same kind of heated debate that every opinionated Weezer fan has gotten into over and over again. "Real Weezer fans know that they haven't had a good album since Pinkerton," says Leslie. "'Pork & Beans' is better than 'Buddy Holly'!," Matt claims later. Leslie: "Weezer died when Matt Sharp left!" Matt: "Weezer didn't start until Scott Shriner got there!" It goes on and on, and the whole time the rest of the people in the room are... so confused that anyone is this opinionated about Weezer. Watch the skit below.
Rivers tweeted a response to the skit: "THEY HAD A WHOLE ASS SKIT ABOUT WEEZER AND ME ON SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE AND IM ACTUALLY CRYING AAAGGGGHHHHHHH." Matt Sharp did too: "Priceless, love it. Life is just beautifully ridiculous. Thanks, @nbcsnl #snl ❤️."
UPDATE: Weezer is now selling a "ride or die" shirt inspired by one of Matt Damon's character's quotes in the skit.
Meanwhile, Miley and Mark Ronson did two songs: their collaborative single "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart" and their newly-released cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)," with John and Yoko's son Sean Ono Lennon joining them. You can watch those below too.
