Green Day

Weezer's Rivers Cuomo covered Green Day, who covered Blondie

Weezer and Green Day were supposed to be keeping the dream of the ’90s alive on the Hella Mega Tour this summer (also with Fall Out Boy), but then coronavirus happened and the tour was rescheduled for 2021, but to tide you over, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo has covered Green Day’s “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” on his latest Island in the Zoom session. He played guitar and sang, and his wife played the string parts on piano, and it was a nice, faithful rendition of the song. You can watch/listen below.

Meanwhile, Green Day just released a cover of Blondie‘s “Dreaming,” the classic opening track of 1979’s Eat to the Beat. Green Day turn the new wavey track into something that kinda sounds like it would’ve fit on American Idiot, and the cover comes with a video featuring footage of the band on stage and on the road. “We can’t wait to see your faces when we’re back out in the world,” they write. You can check that out below too.

The “Dreaming” cover is in addition to Billie Joe Armstrong’s weekly ‘No Fun Mondays’ covers series which continued this week with Eric Carmen’s “That’s Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Billie also took part in the Joey Ramone Birthday Bash livestream this week. You can watch the archive here and donate to the bash’s fundraiser for lymphoma research here.

Rivers also recently did a piano cover of Nirvana‘s “Heart Shaped Box” on his Island in the Zoom streams, and you can watch that below too.

PS: We have a Funko Pop of Rivers Cuomo in the BrooklynVegan Shop.
