What’s going on Monday? (Flaming Lips & Spiritualized, Bill Baird, The Monkees, Bestial Mouths, Filmstrip & more)
The Flaming Lips at Wellmont Theatre in May (more by Dominick Mastrangelo)
Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows. Here are some highlights...
The Flaming Lips, Spiritualized @ Toyota Presents Oakdale Theatre
You'll have to head out to Wallingford, CT to see these two neo-psychedelia vets together (about an hour and a half drive from NYC), but for a double bill like as strong as this one, it's definitely worth it. The Flaming Lips, whose tour brings them back to NYC in October for two Terminal 5 shows with Tame Impala, are on the road supporting this year's masterful, claustrophobic The Terror, which has inspired a drastic change in their light show and setlist to years prior.
Titus Andronicus @ Maxwell's
NJ's Titus Andronicus (who have a new video and were just added to The Fest) have pretty much become one of their home state's success stories at this point, and in honor of the closing of legendary home state venue Maxwell's, they're doing a 3-night run at the venue this week. The second show is tonight, and both remaining shows are totally sold out.
Filmstrip, Severe Severe, The Meaning of Life, Big Quiet @ Death by Audio
Cleveland's Filmstrip make a similar kind of post-slowcore indie rock to Pedro the Lion, as you can hear in two of their recently released tracks, "Stuck On Explode" and "Up On The Promenade," which are streaming below. They're on tour now, and swinging through NYC for two shows this week: Death by Audio tonight and Cake Shop tomorrow.
Bill Baird, Wake Island @ Cake Shop
Baird used to front Texas band Sound Team in the early '00s and emerged early this year with the sprawling Spring Break of the Soul. Also on the bill: Montreal's Wake Island.
The Monkees @ The Capitol Theater
Though minus Davy Jones (who died last year), the rest of The Monkees -- Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith and Mickey Dolenz, who all wrote and sang too, y'know -- will take a tour through their '60s career in chronological order tonight.
Soda Shop, Franny & Zooey, Hippy, Dead Young Friends @ Knitting Factory
Winsome indiepop duo Soda Shop headline this show of locals that also features Hippy, another band worth checking out.
Bestial Mouths, Azar Swan, Chtulu Fantasy @ Glasslands
Los Angeles gothic crew Bestial Mouths are in NYC for the first of two appearances, also set to play the Nothing Changes party on Wednesday amongst the fog-ridden goth crowd. And although Nothing Changes will clearly be the winner with respect to intimacy, Glasslands also has the great Azar Swan as well as Cthulu Fantasy on board, the former riding high off a compelling new digital single.
Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds @ Wingate Field
There's a lot of talk about R.Kelly this year and his substantial catalog and yet Babyface, a name of similar caliber and of the same era, doesn't quite get the same recognition. Check the resume, and see you at Wingate Field.
DJ Dog Dick, Selma Oxor, Extreme Animals, Ulises Zarazu + Alberto Acinas @ 285 Kent
Pictureplane collaborator DJ Dog Dick plays around NYC a lot, and he's always worth showing up for. Tonight he plays a show at 285 Kent with Mexico City's Selma Oxor, Mexico City's Ulises Zarazu + Spain's Alberto Acinas, Extreme Animals, and a special guest appearance at 8:45 from Sasha Des'ree.
Earl Sweatshirt - secret NYC show
FADER and Vitamin Water are presenting a secret Earl Sweatshirt show in NYC tonight, and they're only allowing admission to one contest winner. The winner of said contest must find the hidden envelope which is somewhere in NYC and has information on how to get into the show.
There's also good comedy tonight, like Night Train w/ Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield, Broken Comedy w/ Hannibal Buress @ Bar Matchless, and Whiplash @ UCB. For more laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
