Omar Souleyman @ SXSW 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
Omar Souleyman

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

CT5 w/ DIIV, Mac DeMarco, Blouse, MINKS, Chris Cohen, Heavenly Beat @ The Well
Brooklyn label Captured Tracks celebrates its fifth birthday this weekend with a two-day celebration featuring mos of the bands on their roster. It’s a pretty killer line-up tonight, too.

Summer Thunder w/ Daniel Higgs, Thurston Moore, Nate Wooley, Ryan Sawyer @ Union Pool (FREE)
This weekend’s edition on Summer Thunder has been put together by drummer Ryan Sawyer and he’ll play as part of an improv trio featuring trumpet man Nate Wooley and some dude named Thurston Moore. Lungfish’s Daniel Higgs is on the bill too, and while this show may not be the most listener-friendly music, a chance to see two indie rock icons for free in a small space is a chance you may not want to pass up. 2PM, 21+.

Cajmere, Liars, IO Echo, Lil Silva, Jon Hopkins, Sam Valenti IV @ MoMA PS1
Another strong lineup (as usual) at this week’s Warm Up with sets from three excellent electronic musicians: Chicago house vet Cajmere, post-rock-meets-dance producer Jon Hopkins and poppy UK producer Lil Silva; two live bands: Liars and IO Echo; and a DJ set from Ghostly founder Sam Valenti IV.

Omar Souleyman, Bobb Trimble, 75 Dollar Bill, Steve Gunn @ Pioneer Works
Brooklyn’s Issue Project Room is celebrating a decade of experimental, avant-garde and generally eclectic programming with a two-month festival called Ten Years on the Infinite Plain. It kicks off tonight at Red Hook’s Pioneer Works with a show featuring — in what is now extremely timely booking — Syrian musical legend Omar Souleyman, plus performances by Bobb Trimble’s Flying Spiders, 75 Dollar Bill, and Steve Gunn. Tickets are still available.

Electric Zoo @ Randall’s Island
While Electric Zoo may be widely known for some cringeworthy electronic music, they’ve also got enough good stuff to warrant going. Today (day 2 of 3) we get sets from Moderat, A-Trak, AraabMuzik, Chris Malinchak, Just Blaze, RL Grime and more.

The Dwarves, The Queers @ Le Poisson Rouge
Obnoxious is an understatement, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. Both The Dwarves AND The Queers will team up for a night of snotty punk rock at Le Poisson Rouge. Expect stage dives, childish humor, and lots of fun.

Wrekmeister Harmonies, Spreaders, I Say Fuck @ End Records Omega Warehouse
Yes, the Wrekmeister Harmonies “Big Band” is back for a second round, this time a FREE show at The End Records Omega Warehouse. The show is FREE, BYOB and lets get nuts.

Modeselektor (DJ set), Rudimental (DJ set), Delta Heavy @ Best Buy Theater (Electric Zoo Afterparty)
One of the better Electric Zoo afterparties happens tonight with DJ sets from IDM wizards (and Thom Yorke collaborators) Modeselektor and pop/house/drum & bass crossover band Rudimental.

Shigeto, Beacon, Heathered Pearls @ Bowery Ballroom
Speaking of Ghostly, it’s all Ghostly bill at Bowery Ballroom tonight with sets from electronic (or electronic-leaning) musicians Shigeto, Beacon, and Heathered Pearls. Not exactly the type to get you dancing, but you should be able to viiiiiibe.

Jon Hopkins, Paul Raffaele, Justin Strauss @ Cameo Gallery
After Jon Hopkins blesses the Warm Up crowd with an appearance, he’ll head to Williamsburg for a midnight show at Cameo. With two openers on this bill, be prepared to stay out late.

Rhett Miller @ City Winery
The Old ’97s frontman is back in NYC for a relatively intimate performance sure to please both audiophiles and oenophiles alike.

Martial Canterel @ 285 Kent (more by Fred Pessaro)
Martial Canterel

Martial Canterel, Figure Study, FORMA, Hot Guts @ Cameo Gallery
Xeno & Oaklander’s Sean McBride headlines under his Martial Canterel guise for a night of minimal synth, darkwave and general gothiness.

Grooms, The Flag, Slavve @ Death By Audio
Grooms’ new album, Infinity Caller, may well be their best yet, with big hooks duking it out with their signature guitar noise. Tonight’s the record release party.

Friends, Greatest Hits, Haribo and Test Icicles (DJ set) @ Glasslands
Now down to a trio, Friends soldier on. The most interesting thing about this show may be who’s spinning tunes in between sets: Dev and Sam from mid-’00s arch artrockers Test Icicles.

L-Vis 1990, Lil Silva, Slava, Peter Fonda @ Glasslands
Another post-Warm Up option: Lil Silva brings the party to Williamsburg as well. He’ll be filling Glasslands with a late-night party that has an all around great lineup joining him.

Main Attrakionz, Cashclick, Shyst, M.U.V.I. @ Knitting Factory
It’s been a while since NYC rap duo Main Attrakionz played a hometown show, but if you’ve been itching to see them, tonight’s your chance.

Pictureplane, House of Ladosha, Lil Internet @ Paper Box
If Warm Up (and its related afterparties) and Electric Zoo (and its official afterparties) aren’t enough dance options in one day for you, local party starter Pictureplane is giving you one more. He’ll be at Paper Box in Brooklyn, and House of Ladosha are no bores on stage either.

Poison Idea @ Cake Shop & Saint Vitus
Poison Idea without the legendary guitarist Pig Champion is a bit iffy… Regardless, the Northwest punk legends have some immortal songs, and you can catch them twice today including a matinee at Saint Vitus.

Black Witchery, Teloch Vovin, vadimVon @ Saint Vitus
War machine Black Witchery will attack Saint Vitus on Saturday night, shrouding Manhattan Avenue in darkness and turning all of Greenpoint into the land of sodom. OK, maybe that was heavy-handed, but it will rule regardless.

Young Adults, Pile, Big Ups, Weird Womb, Flagland @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Every band at this sure-to-be-loud rock show is worth seeing. Two of MA’s more promising noisemakers, Young Adults and Pile, are coming over to NYC for the night. Meanwhile, all three locals are regulars on the scene, and always good ones to catch.

Yacht @ The Surf Lodge
YACHT are reliably a good time live and they’ve got the catchy tunes to back their live show. “Psychic City” and “Dystopia” always make for some good sing/dance-alongs. Doesn’t hurt that this is free and outside in an idylic setting. If you’re in the Hamptons, of course.

Novelization! w/ Chris Gethard, Eliot Glazer, Kelly Crisp, Liam McEneaney, Marlow Riley, Heidi Vanderlee  @ Union Hall
They don’t do it so much anymore, but most movies used to get the quickie novelization treatment. The folks listed above will be reading from novelizations of such works as Home Alone 2. The Goonies, When Harry Met Sally, Crossroads, and so much more.

Wild Yaks, Hector’s Pets, Toaster, Blackout, Zula, Kids Row @ Rippers
Your chances to see bands playing at Rockaway’s Rippers are dwindling. Take advantage while you can.

Tombs @ Stanhope House (NJ)
Brooklyn’s Tombs are looking a lot less Brooklyn-y these days, with three of the four members now living outside of the tri-state area, which means “local” shows are fewer and farther between. Head out to Stanhope, NJ to catch the band with the great Pyrrhon in tow.
