Boredoms

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

Krill, Slonk Donkerson, Darlings, White Bike, Eastern Hollows, Lodro (DJ Set) @ 285 Kent Avenue
Boston indie rockers Krill have been in NYC a few times a few times this year, and we’re not complaining at all that they choose to keep coming back. Tonight they headline a bill at 285 Kent which is otherwise loaded with local bands.

Depeche Mode, Bat For Lashes @ Barclays Center
The most popular synthpop band of all time with enough hits to fill a setlist, Depeche Mode will probably play too many new songs for your liking, but you’ll forget all about that by the time they get to “Personal Jesus” and “Never Let Me Down Again.” Openminded attendees should get there early for Bat for Lashes.

Dirty Beaches, SISU, Ell V Gore @ Bowery Ballroom
Dirty Beaches made a pretty bold statement with his latest studio album, the experimental double LP, Drifters/Love is the Devil. But if you’re wondering how that kind of downcast music translates live, head to Bowery Ballroom and you’ll find that he’s got quite the intense show to match. Opening tonight is Dum Dum Girls side project SISU and Toronot’s Ell V Gore (who’s signed to Bad Actors, the label run by Fucked Up’s Ben Cook).

Bells≥, J. Robbins, Jumpers, Thurn & Taxis @ Cake Shop
Two Jawbox members will be in the house tonight; drummer Zach Barocas headlines with his band Bells≥, and frontman J. Robbins is playing solo. J produced and played on the new Bells≥ record, so maybe there will be some collaboration tonight?

Drowners @ Knitting Factory (FREE)
These good-looking Brooklynites have good taste in Britpop and have a few very catchy songs under their belt. This midnight show is free.

Delicate Steve, Celestial Shore, Conveyor @ Glasslands
An extremely talented instrumentalist who plays everything himself on record, gives up some control live to hi equally impressive bandmates. Good pop songs too.

Pretty & Nice, Miniboone, Miracles of Modern Science @ Mercury Lounge
Owing more than a little to the late ’70s new wave of Squeeze, Joe Jackson and XTC, Boston band Pretty & Nice turn our impressive, nevery pop.

AlunaGeorge, Supreme Cuts @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
After an impressive 2012 EP on Tri Angle, a collaborative hit with Disclosure, and a number of other very catchy singles, AlunaGeorge brought everything together for their recently released debut LP, Body Music, which they’re now supporting on their first North American tour. They were at Bowery Ballroom last night, and are at MHOW tonight. Polica collaborators Supreme Cuts open, and the show is sold out.

Matthew Dear, Kate Simko, James Teej @ Highline Ballroom
Having made dance music for more than 10 years, Matthew Dear is adept at mixing styles, innovation all while keeping things accessible…and never losing sight of the beat.

Oddball Fest w/ Dave Chappelle, Flight of the Conchords @ Susquehanna Bank Center
Comedy website Funny or Die is presenting this travelling laugh machine with Kiwi folk duo Flight of the Conchords and Dave Chappelle. Please don’t yell “I’m Rick James, bitch” when Dave’s on though.

The Music Tapes @ 133rd St. Arts Center Lab
Before Neutral Milk Hotel heads on tour, Julian Koster is doing one last run of shows for his band The Music Tapes at 133rd St. Arts Center Lab. Free but RSVP is closed.

Passion Pit, Best Coast @ Pier 26
Passion Pit are still touring like crazy in support of 2012’s Gossamer, the excellent followup to their 2009 debut, Manners. They’re playing the last two Pier 26 shows of the summer tonight and tomorrow. Both with Best Coast, both sold out.

Suicide, Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, No Age, Jonah Bokaer/Airlocks, Kansas City Marching Cobras, YOSHIMO, Ryan Sawyer, Hisham Bharoocha (Soft Circle) @ Riverfront Studios (Station to Station)
Artist Doug Aitken is taking his variety Station to Station tour around the country with varying lineups on each stop. Tonight they hit NYC with synthpunk legends Suicide, two current indie rock mainstays Ariel Pink and No Age, and lots more. Should be an interesting night.

Windhand, Ramming Speed, The Golden Grass @ Saint Vitus Bar
Soulful, woofer-quaking doom metal is the order of the eve at Saint Vitus tonight, when doom gods (and goddess) Windhand descend upon our city. Backed by the great Ramming Speed and new band Golden Grass (mem La Otracina), it should be a killer night of heavy

Porches, Summer People, No One & The Somebodies, Frankie Cosmos @ Shea Stadium
It’s a solid night of indie rock at Shea Stadium, including a set by Porches, who just released their new album on Exploding In Sound, and the anti-folk-inspired Frankie Cosmos (the project of Greta Kline, who plays in Porches, and is backed by Porches singer Aaron Maine on drums).

blink-182, New Beat Fund @ The Wellmont Theatre
I already went off about why this band is worth caring about, and if you’re in agreement with that, you’re probably also in agreement that next week’s Music Hall of Williamsburg show is the place to be. However, as we all learned together, that show sold right out. So if you were one of the many in NYC who couldn’t score tickets, you can still grab some to tonight’s Wellmont show, which is at least closer to NYC and more intimate than the other area dates.

John Prine @ Beacon Theatre
A true country/folk songwriting great, John Prine remains vital 40 years into his career. Roseanne Cash opens, making things more appealing.

Allison Weiss, Secret Someones, The Bright Silence @ Knitting Factory
Punky singer/songwriter Allison Weiss recently opened for Laura Jane Grace and Mina Caputo at Knitting Factory, and tonight she returns to the venue to headline. She released a new album, Say What You Mean, on No Sleep earlier this year, which can be streamed below.

Colin L. Orchestra, Swindlella @ The Grand Victory
Cloud Nothings were just relatively close to NYC last weekend when they played Philly’s Made In America, and tonight two of the members (drummer Jayson Gerycz and singer Dylan Baldi) will actually be in NYC, but it’s with their noise side project Swindlella. The show is pre-show for this weekend’s Spy Music Festival.

Dave Hill @ Book Court
Dave Hill just gave his book Tasteful Nudes a paperback release this week, and he’s celebrating with a release party in Brooklyn at Book Court (163 Court St) at 7 PM tonight. In Dave’s own words, “This is going to be an extreme literary blowout where I read, answer important questions, and then sign books and butts. Also, my rock band Valley Lodge is going to play a rare, yet still pummeling stripped down set of the hits.”
