Phoenix, The Vaccines @ Barclays Center
It’s been quite the time for arena-sized indie rock in Brooklyn lately, with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Vampire Weekend having just taken on the borough’s new joint. Now it’s Phoenix’s turn (who unlike VW and YYYs, are no strangers to this type of room). The Vaccines open.
Parquet Courts, The Beets, Yuppies, Future Punx @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Parquet Courts have put together a solid bill for tonight’s release party for their new Parkay Quarts EP, with sets from The Beets, Omaha’s Yuppies and the Devo-esque Future Punx. Tickets are still available.
The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala @ Terminal 5
Two bands who love making far-out psychedelia, but not without keeping a sense of pop in mind — The Flaming Lips and Tame Impala — team up to co-headline two nights at Terminal 5. Opening both nights is The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, because with that much psychedelic pop at one show, you gotta have a Lennon on the bill, right?
Massive Attack V Adam Curtis @ Park Avenue Armory
Trip hop pioneers Massive Attack have collaborated with filmmaker Adam Curtis for this thought-provoking sensory overload. Reggae legend Horace Andy and Cocteau Twins vocalist Liz Fraser add to the experience. Just don’t expect a traditional concert. Tickets are still available.
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts @ Santos Party House
Hard rock vet Joan Jett returned with her first new album since 2006 this year, and it’s pretty characteristic of the snarly anthems she’s been making her whole career, which of course isn’t a bad thing. Tonight, she and her band play an intimate release show at Santos Party House. Things should get a little crazier than the outdoor Coney Island shows she’s been doing.
Radical Dads, Haybaby, Dead Stars, Boytoy, Honduras @ 285 Kent Avenue
Here we have a very solid lineup of local indie rock talent. Headliners Radical Dads, Dead Stars and Boytoy all both fall on the ’90s end of the scale, Haybaby slide a little more punk, and Honduras lean surfy.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Arc Iris @ Bowery Ballroom
Indie stalwarts CYHSY have a new EP, Little Moments, out this week and you can stream it below. They celebrate with a release show at Bowery Ballroom tonight. Tickets are still available.
Lake, Tropical Ooze, Prettiots @ Cake Shop
Olympia, WA indiepop band Lake just released their sixth album, The World is Real, via K Records. (Stream it on Spotify.) If you’re tastes are on the sunshine pop end of the spectrum, definitely check them out.
Colleen Green & White Fang, The Memories, Hector’s Pets @ Death By Audio
While not officially part of the Burgerama Caravan of All-Stars tour, most of these bands are on that trek. Burgerama, meanwhile, hits Bowery Ballroom on Saturday (10/5).
Jenny Hval, Ludwig Persik, Tica Douglas @ Glasslands
Norway’s Jenny Hval makes the kind of forward-thinking art pop that falls somewhere between Laurie Anderson and PJ Harvey. Tonight’s her second of two NYC shows.
Twin Peaks, Writer, Today’s Hits @ Mercury Lounge
Chicago youngsters Twin Peaks make sprightly indie rock are back in town for two shows, and tonight’s show also features WRITER, who make pretty catchy noise pop.
Stephen Brodsky (of Cave In), Me You Us Them, Wing Dam @ Silent Barn
When Stephen Brodsky isn’t busy with his band Cave In, or his many other projects (most recently, Mutoid Man), he tones it down for his solo project, which plays a local show at Silent Barn tonight.
Fountains of Wayne, Soul Asylum, Evan Dando @ The Capitol Theatre
Fountains of Wayne headline this nostalgia-tinged tour that includes fellow ’90s alt-stars Soul Asylum and Evan Dando. Don’t be ashamed to sing along.
Mutilation Rites, Earthling, Syphilitic Lust @ Union Pool
Local black/thrash shredders Mutilation Rites are on a creative tear. They put out 3(!) releases in 2012 — two EPs and an LP. They’re apparently working on new material already, and will be playing a bunch of it at this show. Like-minded out-of-towners Earthling and icky locals Syphilitic Lust will provide support.
Ben Sollee, River Whyless @ City Winery
Cellist and singer/songwriter Ben Sollee makes music that defies easy categorization. Hear for yourself: his new album, The Hollow Sessions, is a free download.
Nels Cline, Elliot Sharp @ The Stone
Avant-garde composer/musician Elliot Sharp is in residency this week (10/1-6) at The Stone, and tonight he and Nels Cline are doing an improvisational duo guitar set for the late show (10 PM).
Okta Logue, Friend Roulette @ Mercury Lounge
German psychedelic rockers Okta Logue are kicking off their North American tour in NYC tonight with a headlining show at Mercury Lounge. They’ll be back during CMJ, when they play Bowery Ballroom (10/18) with The Long Winters, Eleanor Friedberger, and more. Opening tonight’s Merc show is NYC chamber pop collective Friend Roulette.
Dita Von Teese @ The Gramercy Theatre
Burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese continues her four-night run at Gramercy.
Big Terrific @ Cameo (FREE)
Max Silvestri hosts the free weekly comedy show in the back of Williamsburg’s Lovin’ Cup. Tonight’s line-up features James Patterson, Matt Koff, and Jared Logan
