What's going on Saturday? (Arctic Monkeys, Darkside, Marked Men, Weekend, Screaming Females, Mutual Benefit & more)

Arctic Monkeys @ Webster Hall in Sept (more by Luis Ruiz)
Arctic Monkeys

Weekend @ Bowery Electric, 2012 (more by Sarah Gainer)
Weekend

Browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows. Here are some highlights…

Arctic Monkeys, Deerhunter @ MSG
Arctic Monkeys have evolved way past the mid-2000s garage rock revival poster boys they once were, embracing new directions (some drastic, others more subtle) on each new album. Tonight they take on MSG for their first time as headliners (they opened for Black Keys there), and it’s sold out. Making tonight doubly exciting, Deerhunter open.

The Marked Men, Kim Phuc, Shellshag @ Saint Vitus (3 PM)
Denton garage punk greats The Marked Men aren’t the most active band — their last record came out in 2009 and the members have been spending a lot of time in side projects. They also haven’t played NYC in eight years but that changes this weekend with three shows in two days at Saint Vitus. This early show is the second, and openers Kim Phuc are reuniting for the show. It’s sold out but tickets will be available at the door.

The Marked Men, Iron Chic, Radiator Hospital, Worriers @ Saint Vitus (8 PM)
See above^^^ This is the third and final Marked Men show of the weekend, and the openers are especially great on this one too. If you’re going, don’t miss them!

Mutual Benefit, Leapling, Norwegian Arms @ Knitting Factory
Mutual Benefit quickly picked up buzz towards the end of last year for their sound which came pretty fully realized (comparisons include Sufjan and The Antlers). Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows this week.

Crystal Stilts, Weekend, Yvette @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar gets dark tonight with three goth-leaning bands: the spectral sounds of Crystal Stilts, the noise that is Weekend, and Yvette who border on industrial. You might want earplugs for this one. Free.

Marissa Nadler, Amen Dunes, Zachary Cale @ Glasslands
Marissa Nadler just put out her excellent new album, July, this week (her first for Sacred Bones), and like her earlier material, it takes on delicate loner folk with dark atmospheres. This show should be a somber, yet entrancing one.

Screaming Females, California X, Brick Mower, Priests, Black Wine @ MHOW
It’s the final night of the Don Giovanni Brooklyn showcases with an excellent lineup that includes shredding power trio Screaming Females, sludgefeasters California X, scrappy pop punks Brick Mower, intense postpunks Priests, and power pop trio Black Wine.

Murder City Devils, Tweens @ Webster Hall
Organ-filled garage punk greats Murder City Devils are pretty quiet these days, but thankfully they’re doing this short tour which brings them back to NYC for their first show here in a while. Openers Tweens are worth catching too. Their newest single, “Be Mean,” can be streamed below.

You Blew It!, Prawn, Crying, Living Room @ Shea Stadium
You Blew It! had a pretty big jump in their career this year with their more rock-oriented LP, Keep Doing What You’re Doing, which separated them from the bulk of “emo revivalists” (sue me) that they were previously lumped in with. Good openers tonight too.

The Range, Glass Gang @ Baby’s All Right
Providence, RI knob-twiddler James Hinton is The Range and his 2013 album Nonfiction has gotten many accolades for it’s chilled-out but danceable style. He just opened for Metronomy this week, now see him headline here.

Woodsman @ Death By Audio
Mixing drony folk, motorik rhythms and the occasional chopped-up beat, Brooklyn’s Woodsman released their self-titled third album this week. This is the kickoff to their tour with Herbcraft.

Ava Luna, Rachel Brown @ The Apollo Theater
Ava Luna’s funk-punk (think Talking Heads, ESG, etc) sounds as good as ever on their new single, and they should keep the crowd pretty entertained at this Apollo Cafe show.

Jay Farrar @ City Winery
As frontman for Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, Jay Farrar is alt country royalty, with a cannon of dusty, heartfelt, world-weary songs. This is his first of two nights at City Winery; tonight’s sold out but you can still get tickets to Sunday’s show.

Bambi Kino @ Union Hall
Celebrate the Beatles’ 50th anniversary of their first NYC visit by checking out tribute act Bambi Kino who focus on the early years of the Fab Four when they lived in Berlin. The band features Doug Gillard and Nada Surf’s Ira Elliot.

The Fest at The Grand Hyatt
More Fab Four action: This is “the premier Beatles convention in the world” with a mix of memorabilia and performances. Performers include Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon (whose hit “World Without Love” was written by McCartney), Chad & Jeremy, Donovan, and more. More info here.

World/Inferno Friendship Society, The Fighting Jamesons @ Bowery Ballroom
World Inferno Friendship Society have been mixing punk, klezmer, cabaret and more since 1996. The band are on the East Coast celebrating the release of their new single, “Packed Funeral.”

The Stepkids, Via Audio @ Brooklyn Bowl
Having cut their teeth as touring musicians — backing the likes of Alicia Keys, Lauren Hill and 50 Cent — these three struck out on their own. Like The Bees, The Stepkids recreate a specific era of sound — early ’70s psychedelic soul — with such skill you might think it was some obscure Fifth Dimension album or outtakes from Psychedelic Shack. That it works beyond an exercise is mimicry shows how talented these three are.

Darkside, High Water @ Terminal 5
Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington’s prog/dance duo continue to move up in the world, thanks to a great full length record, Psychic, which dropped last year. Tonight’s huge Terminal 5 show (their first headlining the venue) is sold out. Opener High Water is the project of Will Epstein, who has played live with Nico and Dave before (not to be confused with High Water or High Water).

Shilpa Ray, Roadside Graves, Rosy Street, Swaai Boys @ Pianos
An intense performer, Shilpa Ray doesn’t let you just idly watch her. Not that you could. She’s also likely the most aggressive harmonium player you’ve ever seen. Her latest EP, It’s All Self Fellatio, came out last year on Nick Cave’s Bad Seed Ltd. label.

Atlantic Thrills, The Sirs @ Cake Shop
Providence, RI’s Atlantic Thrills make party-friendly beach rock. Check out a cut from their self-titled debut which came out this week.

Baio of Vampire Weekend, Headband & Hooligan @ Cameo Gallery
When Chris Baio isn’t playing bass in Vampire Weekend, he’s keeping people dancing with his DJ project Baio, which he brings to Cameo tonight.

Celestial Shore, Cloud Becomes Your Hand, Aye Aye Rabbit, Little King @ Silent Barn
It’s a good local bill at Silent Barn tonight, including mathy indie pop band Celestial Shore, avant-popsters Cloud Becomes Your Hand, and the Deerhoof-related Aye Aye Rabbit.

MartyParty, Joker, DKDS @ 88 Palace
Joker and MartyParty both make big, dancey, Purple sounds, and they should keep 88 Palace pretty bumpin’ tonight.
