What's going on Thursday? (Loop, FKA twigs, I Break Horses, New York's Alright, Black Lips, Coathangers, Eaters & more)

Loop / FKA twigs
LOOP
FKA TWIGS

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Loop, Purling Hiss, Donovan Blanc @ Le Poisson Rouge
Existing for a barely five years, UK psych band Loop were one of the most perfectly-named bands ever. Rarely bothering with verse-chorus-verse song structure, the South London group took a riff and added layer upon layer till it had its own gravitational field. They were heavy, man, and got heavier as they went along. Loop are back in action and are stopping in NYC tonight on their way to Austin Psych Fest.

I Break Horses, River Consoles @ Mercury Lounge
The last time I Break Horses played Mercury Lounge main horsebreaker Maria Lindén was just about too sick to play. Let’s hope for better health this time through NYC, as her second album of noisy/beautriful synthgaze is alluring.

Cloud Cult @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Minnesota’s orch-pop ensemble offer up “An evening with Cloud Cult,” with two sets: one acoustic and one electric. There may be some visual arts being made during the show as well.

The Black Lips, Natural Child @ Webster Hall
Get greasy with two of garage rock’s wilder acts: Atlanta’s debaucherous Black Lips and Nashville’s southern-fried Natural Child. Tickets are still available.

The Coathangers, Audacity, Ex-Humans, Weed @ Baby’s All Right
There will be a lot of loud, scrappy guitars on this bill with garage punk from The Coathangers and Audacity, plus Vancouver’s sludgy Weed.

Eaters, Yvette, Dan Friel, Future Punx DJ set @ Glasslands
If you dig synthy, soundtracky music (John Carpenter, Goblin) or darkwave, Brooklyn duo Eaters may be for you. Tonight’s the record release party for their debut album, and it’s a pretty killer bill all-around, with ferocious Yvette and quirky new wavers Future Punx.

Dan Croll, Panama Wedding @ Bowery Ballroom
UK singer-songwriter Dan Croll released his debut album, Sweet Dissaray, back in March which is full of smart, catchy pop. Tonight’s sold out but he’ll be back in NYC for Northside Festival.

FKA twigs @ Westway
London’s trip-hop-inspired FKA twigs began picking up buzz last year for her EPs that were co-produced by UNO producer and Yeezus collaborator Arca. She made her NYC debut at Glasslands last night, and tonight’s her second-ever NYC show. Sold out.

Crying, Donovan Wolfington, Dowsing, Quarterbacks @ Death by Audio
Donovan Wolfington make a solid blend of punk and indie rock that’s catchy, raw, and should go over well in a small, all ages venue like Death by Audio. The rest of the bill is pretty good too, including chiptune band Crying, power pop/emo band Dowsing, and lo-fi bedroom band Quarterbacks.

Jacques Greene, Samo Sound Boy, Total Fitness @ Output
Montreal producer Jacques Greene may not be from the UK but he has an excellent take on the garage beats that tend to come from there. Catch him in NYC at Output tonight.

Dawn of Humans, Contingent, Blotter, Asile, Goosebumps @ The Wick (NY’s Alright)
The second annual NYC punk/hardcore festival New York’s Alright kicks off tonight at new-ish Brooklyn venue The Wick. If you’re into the kind of crazy shows that end up looking like this, this bill is pretty stacked.

The Wonder Years, Fireworks, Citizen, Real Friends, Modern Baseball @ Best Buy Theatre
The band we’re most excited about on this bill is Philly’s Modern Baseball, whose mix of indie rock, lyrical pop punk, and sad folk will make former emo kids feel pretty nostalgic, but it’s got the appeal to reach beyond that scene too.

Friend Roulette, Son Step, Conveyor, Small Wonder @ Knitting Factory
A nice line-up of Brooklyn pop acts, including Small Wonder whose understated style is in line with Mutual Benefit or Kings of Convenience.
