What's going on Saturday? (4Knots, Warm Up, Ash Borer, The Men, Beyonce & Jay Z, Ed Schrader, Yumi Zouma & more)

Dinosaur Jr at MHOW in May (more by Caroline Harrison)
Dino Jr

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Dinosaur Jr., Those Darlins, Speedy Ortiz, Nude Beach, Radkey, Viet Cong, Juan Wauters (of The Beets), Mac DeMarco, Re-Tros, Dead Stars @ South Street Seaport (4Knots Music Festival)
It’s the annual 4Knots Music Festival with two stages worth of great free music. Setup’s a little different this year, with the Main Stage on Pier 16 and the Second Stage being the Front Row stage on Fulton & Front. Bands start at 1 PM.

Ab-Soul, Jarren Benton, YC The Cynic, DJ Meka @ Webster Hall (4Knots After Party)
After 4Knots keep the party going at Webster Hall with Black Hippy’s Ab-Soul. He just released his newest album, These Days…, which is pretty expansive and definitely a winner if you’re a fan of his other work or his pals Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar.

Mister Saturday Night, Cibo Matto (live), Archie Pelago (live), Gabriel Garzon-Montano, Auntie Flo @ MoMA PS1
The weekly Warm Up series continues in MoMA PS1’s outdoor courtyard with another lineup of forward-thinking electronic music. And perhaps the most exciting thing to some is today’s live set from the recently reinvigorated Cibo Matto.

Tyvek, Big Ups, Alex G, Pile, “Muscle Car,” Guerilla Toss, Ricky Eat Acid, Roomrunner, Emily Reo, Ed Schrader’s Music Beat, Flagland, Mannequin Pussy, Baked, Cousin Brian, Flashlight O, Ronald Paris, Trace Mountains @ Secret Project Robot
So many all-day options today. This one’s presented by Exploding In Sound and Impose and is made up of mostly-local DIY bands. It wouldn’t be uncommon to see a few of these bands at Shea or Silent Barn on any given night in NYC, but to have this many at once is a great time to see some excellent, more under-the-radar music. Plus there’s a secret band. Any guesses on who it is?

Ed Schrader’s Music Beat, Bambara, Bodyparts @ Palisades
You can also catch Ed Schrader’s Music Beat later in the evening at this show. Ed released his new LP, Party Jail, last month via JEFF The Brotherhood’s Infinity Cat label. As the title implies the record is a good time, 13 hyperactive tallboys of fuzzbass dancepunk, not a million miles away from Le Tigre or The B-52s. It’s a lot of fun.

The Men, Survival, Mercury Rising @ Union Pool
4Knots isn’t your only free live indie rock show option. Union Pool’s “Summer Thunder” series continues to day with The Men who went from punk to something more complex (and jammier) as they went on. This should be a good one.

Pampers, Watery Love, Doug Gillard, Spectre Folk @ WFMU
WFMU has taken over the ground floor of its building in Jersey City to use as a performance space. They’re breaking the place in with a pretty killer bill, featuring Brooklyn’s “thug pop” practitioners Pampers, all-around cool dude Doug Gillard and more.

Phish @ Randall’s Island
Get your drug rugs on and prepare for 3 days of endless jams on Randall’s Island. Day 2 of 3.

Ash Borer, Hell, Vorde, Yellow Eyes @ Saint Vitus
It’s a killer bill at Vitus tonight with atmospheric black metallers Ash Borer and their doomy tourmates Hell, plus solid locals Vorde (who should work especially well with Ash Borer) and Yellow Eyes. Ash Borer and Hell do it again at Acheron tomorrow (moved from 538 Johnson).

Beyonce, Jay-Z @ MetLife Stadium
Beyonce and Jay Z may be at very different places in their careers — Bey just put out her best album while Jay’s best material is likely behind him — but needless to say they’ve both got tons of A+ tracks (and many to collaborate on). This show will be quite the spectacle. Night 2 of 2.

Anasazi, Goosebumps, La Misma, Nomad, Gowanus Mutant Commandos @ Palisades
If you’re into dark, heavy, and wicked fast punk, this show is stacked with killer local bands of that variety. UPDATE: this show was moved from 538 Johnson to Palisades.

Jamaican Queens, Zula, Ronald Paris (Aaron Maine of Porches), Courtship Ritual @ Baby’s All Right
Tonight Baby’s hosts a pretty good bill of poppy NYC indie bands.

David Wax Museum, River City Extension, Arum Rae, Morningsiders, Pegasus Warning (DJ set) @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
Brooklyn Night Bazaar offers weekends of local artisan shopping, gourmet eats, beer and wine, ping pong, black light minigolf and music all under one Greenpoint roof. Tonight’s entertainment is headlined by rootsy band David Wax Museum.

Babasonicos, Juana Molina, La Santa Cecilia @ Central Park Summerstage
The Latin Alternative Music Conference continues today with this big free show as part of Summerstage.

Lusine, Lemonade, Chad Valley, Xeno & Oaklander, Yumi Zouma, Heathered Pearls (DJ set) @ MHOW
Cascine Records is home to a lot of effervescent, chilled synthpop. (Does that make them the champagne of labels?) Three of their artists — UK act Chad Valley, Brooklyn’s Lemonade (who just signed with the label after being on True Panther) and New Zealand’s Yumi Zouma — will be participating in a three-city July jaunt dubbed the “Cascine & Friends Tour.” Friends in this case is Ghostly Intl who bring Lusine, Xeno & Oaklaner and Heathered Pearls to the table.

The Pendulum Swings, The Tom Jones (feat. Corn Mo), Mary-Go-Round, Joe McGinty’s Live Keyboard Karaoke @ Paper Box
The folks behind longtime party Rubulad are presenting this night they’re calling “Paradise Fruit Stand” which is a tropical party headlined by The Pendulum Swings (Jason Trachtenberg’s non-slideshow band) and also features Joe McGinty’s popular Live Keyboard Karaoke (which usually happens at Manhattan Inn).

Kestrels, Adult Dude, Worriers, White Rope @ Shea Stadium
Rock out with Canadian shoegazers Kestrels, NYC indie rockers Adult Dude, and NYC melodic punks Worriers, the current band of Lauren Measure.

Funebrarum, Undergang, Trepanation, Astraes Pestis, Grim Legion @ The Acheron
Good night for metal at Acheron with NJ death metallers Funebrarum, Danish death/grinders Undergang and more.

Rose Windows, High Waisted @ Rough Trade
Portland psych band Rose Windows pack their songs with Summer of Love harmonies, psych-folk style flute, and jangling acoustic guitars. Adding to the mood: visuals by Drippy Eye Productions. Groovy.

San Fermin @ The Surf Lodge
If you happen to be in Montauk this weekend…well lucky you! Today’s installment of The Surf Lodge’s is the folky/theater group San Fermin.

Alix Perez, FaltyDL, Starkey, Star Eyes, Doctor Jeep, Turrbotax @ Verboten
FaltyDL has a new album coming which he recently released a track from called “Some Jazz Shit” (maybe you can guess what it sounds like). He’ll hopefully preview more of it tonight.

Huey Lewis and the News @ Citi Field (Mets post-game show)
While it was never really hip to be square, it does seem like a fun evening to catch Huey Lewis & The News playing in front of Sports fans and sports fans after the Mets game.

Procol Harum @ The Space at Westbury
Best known for “A Whiter Shade of Pale,” this current lineup of Procol Harum still features frontman and founding member Gary Brooker.

Yes @ NYCB Theatre at Westbury
The prog rock vets — which are currently Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes, and new(ish) vocalist Jon Davison — play in the round tonight.

TV Ghost, Christines @ Cake Shop
Indiana’s dar, postpunky TV Ghost play their second NYC show this week with an opening set from shoegazy Brooklyn band Christines.

A Wilhelm Scream, The Flatliners, A Balance Between, Lost in Society @ Marlin Room at Webster Hall
It’s a double dose of melodic punk/hardcore tonight with Massachusetts’ A Wilhelm Scream and Canada’s The Flatliners.

Baby Dayliner, Sir Jarlsberg @ Mercury Lounge
A vet on the NYC scene, Baby Dayliner is really one of a kind, mixing synthpop, R&B, hiphop and a flair for melodrama. If you’re not in his cult, you probably haven’t seen him live.

Warped Tour @ Jones Beach
If someone’s dragging you to Warped Tour today, well, we feel bad for you. But to make it a little better on yourself, we recommend catching Plague Vendor whose garage punk is far from anything you’d associate with the festival.
