Neutral Milk Hotel, Circulatory System @ Prospect Park Bandshell
While Jeff Mangum hasn’t released any new music since 1998’s In The Aeoplane Over the Sea, nobody really seems to mind now seeing how he and NMH are finally playing shows again, and many people are getting to hear those songs live for the first time. Following this past winter’s shows, he and the band now return to NYC for a victory lap at these two outdoor Celebrate Brooklyn! shows, which sounds like a nice place to hear the classics.

Arto Lindsay, Zs, Bigyuki @ LPR
Downtown scene vet Arto Lindsay has long dabbled in tropical sounds so it should come as no surprise to see him playing this show as part of Brasil Summerfest.

FREEMAN (formerly Gene Ween) @ Mercury Lounge
With his long-running band a done deal, the artist formerly known as Gene Ween released his new solo album today via Partisan. He’s got a soft spot for ’70s pop on the new album which is an enjoyable listen. He celebrates the album’s release tonight at this show.

Joyce Manor @ Rough Trade
Joyce Manor’s new album is out today, and it combines the forceful punk of their debut with the more ambitious leanings of its followup, all without crossing the 20-minute mark. This is an early evening in-store (they go on at 7 PM and you have to purchase the album from Rough Trade to get in), so that plus their knack for short songs should give you plenty of time to catch another show afterwards.

Juicy J, Project Pat @ Terminal 5
Juicy J is a veteran of hip hop thanks to his time in Three 6 Mafia (remember, he been rich since the ’90s), but he doesn’t act like an elder statesman. The trap rap bangerz on last year’s Stay Trippy are as fun and modern as many of today’s younger stars.

PHOX, Trails and Ways @ Knitting Factory
Wisconsin indie pop outfit PHOX combine sunny melodies with folky arrangements (and honeyed, breathy vocals) for a sound as airy as a summer breeze. This is their first of two NYC shows this week.

Brody Dalle, Slothrust @ Bowery Ballroom
Brody Dalle put out three records of solid grunge punk in the early 2000s with The Distillers. This year she’s got our first solo album out, but from the looks of recent setlists she’s been treating her crowds to plenty of material from her old band as well.

Lucero, The Vansaders @ Stone Pony
Country punks Lucero know how to have a rowdy, whiskey-fueled good time, but they also know how to pull your heartstrings with sad (and also whiskey-fueled) down-on-their-luck songs. They don’t hit NYC on their current tour, but they play two nearby shows, this being the first.

Kiesza @ Santos Party House
The thumping house bass of Kiesza’s hit “Hideaway” gets stuck in your head pretty quickly, and for us in New York, watching its video filmed on the streets of Williamsburg is about as fun as the song itself. Now you can see her live in New York tonight.

Electric Six @ Rocks Off Cruise
Electric Six are essentially a one-joke band — off the charts ego/bravado/innuendo over danceable rock — who’ve managed to milk it across 10 albums. Whether you had enough after “Danger! High Voltage!” or still dig the schtick, E6 are always a fun live show. Plus, this is on a boat.

RX Bandits, The Dear Hunter, From Indian Lakes @ Best Buy Theater
While RX Bandits seemed like they’d be done for a while there, they are actually fully back in action and have a new album out this year which is more of their punk/prog/reggae blend.
