Cherry Glazerr, Sunflower Bean, GYMSHORTS, Roya @ Baby’s All Right
LA high school trio Cherry Glazerr released their debut album, Haxel Princess, this spring on notoriously party-friendly Burger Records. It’s glitter-dappled, punky pop that’s not scared to throw attitude or a Big Riff in your face.
Dick Dale, Screamin’ Rebel Angels @ Brooklyn Bowl
The self-proclaimed King of Surf Guitar will bring “Miserlou” and boatload of other instrumental hits (his and other folks’) to Brooklyn Bowl tonight.
Outside World, Roses, Wreaths, The Yin Yangs @ Cake Shop
While veteran actor Abe Vigoda is still with us, the LA group named after him is no more, quietly dissolving a while back. Guitarist Juan Velazquez has formed Roses, a trio who will release their debut EP via Group Tightner on August 5. Roses aren’t miles away from what Abe Vigoda did, making dark, danceable post-punk-influenced pop.
Dr. John and the Night Trippers, Hurray for the Riff Raff @ Central Park Summerstage
With over forty years of New Orleans R&B under his belt, Dr. John needs no introduction and his most recent album, 2012’s Dan Auerbach-produced Locked Down, is a late-career standout. Making this a cool double bill, much newer band Hurray for the Riff Raff open with their authentic-sounding Americana.
The Soupcans, Pampers, Ultrathin, Chat Logs @ Death By Audio
Canada’s noisy Soupans take the sarcasm, anger, and weirdness that began filtering into post-hardcore via late period Black Flag and The Jesus Lizard, but speed things back up to the genre’s early days.
Daniele Baldelli, Charanjit Singh, Simian Mobile Disco, Hiro Kone, Maria Chavez @ MoMA PS1
Warm Up continues today with another excellent lineup. This time its Italian Cosmic Disco pioneer Daniele Baldelli, Indian electronic music pioneer Charanjit Singh, UK duo Simian Mobile Disco, former Effi Briest and Up Died Sound member Hiro Kone, and the Software-signed Maria Chavez.

After their Warm Up set, SMD hit Cameo for a late-night DJ set.
Nine Inch Nails, Soungarden, Dillinger Escape Plan @ PNC Bank Arts Center
Relive 1994 with two of alternative rock’s biggest bands who both put out seminal albums on the same day that year. Cool openers on this tour too. Tonight it’s math-core greats The Dillinger Escape Plan.
Jurassic 5, Dilated Peoples, The Beat Junkies @ Best Buy Theater
It’s a night of late-’90s-era conscious rap, headlined by California’s great Jurassic 5 who reunited last year after calling it quits in 2007.
Kes the Band, KIT @ Prospect Park Bandshell
The free Celebrate Brooklyn shows at Prospect Park continue with this one which is headlined by Trinidad and Tobago’s Kes the Band. Also of note is “tambutronic” group KiT who are sure to get people moving.
The Baseball Project, The Minus 5 @ Rough Trade
The high-concept rock band formed by Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows/REM) and Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate) released their third album, titled 3rd, back in March. The record, which also features R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Mike Mills plus drummer Linda Pitmon, hits on more stories from America’s Pastime, including songs about Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron,Lenny Dykstra, and acid-tripping pitcher Dock Ellis.
Slavve @ Rough Trade
Local guitar/drum duo Slavve include a former member of Surfer Blood and Weird Wives, and they make quality lo-fi rock that hits pretty hard.
United Nations, Frameworks, Descender, Pagan Girls @ Saint Vitus
United Nations began as a side project for Geoff Rickly to make extremely heavier music than his main band while he was still in Thursday. Now that that band has called it quits, Geoff is putting a lot more time into United Nations, and even if he insists the project is an elaborate joke poking fun at punk rock, it sounds like one hell of a serious punk rock band. Openers Frameworks pull from a similar type of post-hardcore that UN do (and they probably pull a bit from Thursday as well), and they make this a good double bill.
Sinkane, Takuya Kuroda @ The Lot in Long Island City
This is the kickoff event for The Lot LIC Music & Film series which brings free music every Saturday and free movies every Thursday. DFA signed Sinkane, who has a new album out next month, headlines. Free, starts at 3 PM.
The Hotelier, Foxing, Prawn @ The Studio at Webster Hall
This is a great double bill from two lyrically powerful but very different sounding rock bands. The Hotelier echo the early ’00s emo of Brand New and Taking Back Sunday, but their songs are discussing different matters than those bands. Foxing sound like The Antlers if they screamed sometimes, and their live show is one that just has to be seen. Openers Prawn do Kinsella-style emo well and they’re worth catching as well.
Mark Eitzel, Anders Parker, Death Vessel @ The Wick
The early show at The Wick is a good night for singer/songwriters with American Music Club’s Mark Eitzel, Jay Farrar/Jim James collaborator Anders Parker, and falsetto-tinged indie folk singer Death Vessel.
Paul Johnson, Egyptrixx, Sinden @ The Wick
After the Mark Eitzel show, The Wick takes a turn for the electronic, with this stacked bill of dance producers.
Jessica Pratt, Mike Wexler @ Union Pool
Union Pool’s Summer Thunder series continues today with free music in the venue’s backyard. Today’s lineup is two modern artists who recall the sounds of late ’60s/early ’70s psychedelic folk, and they both do it really well. Should feel just right outdoors as long as the weather’s nice. Bands usually start around 4 PM.
Noothgrush, Ruine, Show of Bedlam, Grudges @ Acheron
Noothgrush put out high quality sludge for most of the ’90s, before going on their initial hiatus in 2001. The band have been active again for a while now, most recently releasing a covers LP that took on Pink Floyd, Celtic Frost, Duran Duran and more. Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows this week.
Container, Ahlzagailzehguh, Brown Recluse Alpha, Kcidgod, Dark Sister, Max Eilbacher, MV Carbon, Dysgenix @ Red Light District
Rob Schofield, the abrasive noise producer better known as Container, returned with an excellent new album, Adhesive, this year and the live show sounds as wonderfully anti-social as the record. He plays as part of Burning Fleshtival V which promises “Music, Performance and Comedy” at the Far Rockaways space.
Diane Birch, Secret Someones, 5j Varrow, Prettiots, Poor Remy @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
The Deli has been zine-ing the scene for ten years and are celebrating the anniversary this weekend with shows at Brooklyn Night Bazaar.
