Sleep at Hopscotch 2013 (more by Karen A. Mann)
Sleep

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Sleep, Holy Sons @ Stage 48
Legendary doomers Sleep returned this year with their first new song in 20 years, and it has them sounding in great form. Very strong support comes from Holy Sons, whose Emil Amos who also plays in Om with Sleep’s Al Cisneros. Holy Sons will be debuting a new live band at this show.

Oso Blanco (Colin Stetson, Nate Wooley, C. Spencer Yeh, Ryan Sawyer), Samara Lubelski, James Hof @ Baby’s All Right
Saxophone great Colin Stetson is known for a ton of collaborations (Bon Iver, Arcade Fire), and tonight he’ll be teaming up with a few members of NYC’s experimental scene for a quartet set as Oso Blanco. Samara Lubelski (Jackie-O Motherfucker, Chelsea Light Moving) and James Hoff open with solo sets.

KNTRLR, LA Font, Ravens & Chimes, Water @ Cake Shop
One band worth catching on this bill for sure is LA trio LA Font who make hooky guitar pop that’s equal parts ’70s powerpop and ’90s indie rock.

Tom Maxwell & The Minor Drag, Aabaraki @ Mercury Lounge
With Squirrel Nut Zippers, Tom Maxwell mined Prohibition-era jazz for a ’90s audience. After a 10 year hiatus from music, Maxwell returns with a new band — The Minor Drag — and album, but still with an eye on the past. Tonight’s the record release show.

Aviator, Taking Meds, Au Revoir, For Everest @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Aviator make a similar kind of ’90s/’00s-style screamo/post-hardcore to modern bands like Touche Amore and Pianos Become the Teeth, and if you like those guys you’ll dig this show too.

Greg Barris, Chris Gethard, Nikki Glaser @ Union Hall
Comedian Greg Barris does his ‘Unbunned’ show tonight with quality guests such as Chris Gethard and Nikki Glaser. Dima and Jeanette from Corrupt Autopilot will be guest hosts.

Night Train with Wyatt Cenac @ Littlefield
Hop aboard Wyatt Cenac’s weekly Night Train comedy show tonight with guests Byron Bowers, Hari Kondabolu, Desiree Burch, Brandon Wardell and Loyiso Gola.
