Cult of Youth

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Big Ups, Sick Feeling, Flagland, Downies @ Baby’s All Right
Great pairing of two NYC post-hardcore bands at Baby’s tonight. Big Ups channel a type of the genre that feels directly inspired by Fugazi and Slint, while Sick Feeling go for a heavier side more akin to turn-of-the-century Equal Vision bands.

Dr. Dog, Roadkill Ghost Choir @ Bowery Ballroom
It’s the fifth night of Dr. Dog’s 8-night NYC run with different openers. Tonight it’s Roadkill Ghost Choir.

Cult of Youth, Astral Knife @ Home Sweet Home (Nothing Changes)
Cult of Youth’s newest LP for Sacred Bones, Final Days, has their mix of driving post-punk with dark neo-folk sounding better than ever. And a foggy Nothing Changes party is one of the best places you can go for this kind of thing.

Small Wonder, Bethlehem Steel, Julie Byrne, Hank May @ Palisades
Save for indie rockers Bethlehem Steel, this bill is packed with local introverted songwriters who make hushed music of very high quality.

RJD2, Fat Tony @ Brooklyn Bowl
RJD2’s beats are behind some of the 2000s’ best underground hip hop, and he’s got plenty of solo material to move the floors at the final night of his 2-night stand at Brooklyn Bowl. It’s worth catching rapper Fat Tony’s opening set too.

Joyce Manor, Mitski @ Asbury Lanes
Cali punks Joyce Manor play NYC tomorrow (free but RSVPed out), but tonight they’re nearby and paired with the excellent singer/songwriter Mitski.

Savages, Drums and Drones @ Mercury Lounge
It’s the second of Savages’ nine NYC shows this month where they’re working out new material with us as guinea pigs. The first show was about 60% new stuff, all of which sounded pretty good. It’s sold out. Opening is Drones and Drones which is one of Brian Chase’s non-YYYs projects.

Suzanne Vega, John Easdale, John Eddie and His Dirty Ol’ Band, Joe D’Urso and Stone Caravan @ The Cutting Room
This is the “Light of Day Winterfest” that aims to raise money to fight Parkinson’s Disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy and ALS. A host of talent — including folk artist Suzanne Vega and Dramarama’s John Easdale — will provide the musical entertainment.

Shawn Colvin and Jackson Browne @ City Winery
Having played City Winery shows already with Steve Earle and Mary Chapin Carpenter and tonight she’s paired with mellow ’70s icon Jackson Browne.

Louis CK @ Madison Square Garden
Once an underground sensation, Louis CK has become one of the biggest comedians in America — by doing it his way. This is Louis CK’s second of three MSG shows.

Big Terrific @ Cameo
Max Silvestri hosts the free weekly comedy show in the back of Williamsburg’s Cameo. No word on who’s performing tonight, but Max usually lets us know via his Twitter.
