Belle & Sebastian

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Belle & Sebastian, Real Estate @ Radio City Music Hall
Glasgow indiepop royalty Belle & Sebastian released their new album, Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance, way back in January and they’re just now playing NYC in support. No longer the shy stereotypes they were when Tigermilk came out, B&S are consummate showmen these days and should have no problem playing to the cheap seats. Real Estate should make for a gentle, tuneful opener.

Cold Beat, Dream Police @ Union Pool
Two Sundays ago, Cold Beat played amongst the cardigan set at NYC Popfest, and then scooted over to Silent Barn for a decidedly punk-oriented show. Somehow the San Francisco band (fronted by Grass Window’s Hannah Lew) fit in both settings, making jangly pop with serious fangs. Brooklyn synth-punks Dream Police (featuring Mark Perro and Nick Chiericozzi of The Men) make for a good opener. Recommended.

Bad Religion, Plague Vendor @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Punk veterans Bad Religion are on night 2 of their four-night stand in NYC tonight, and tonight’s show has them playing all 21st century material. Tomorrow they do 20th century songs at Bowery Ballroom, and then 21st century at Bowery on Friday. The much newer but also great Epitaph punk band Plague Vendor opens all shows.

Coliseum, Child Bite, No Way, UnWed @ Saint Vitus
Coliseum’s new album, Anxiety’s Kiss, has them expanding upon their consistently great post-hardcore/heavy punk formula, adding in new musical ground like the desolate psychedelia of “Driver At Dusk.” They’re currently on tour in support of that, hitting NYC tonight.

Shellshag, The Hussy, Sharkmuffin @ Baby’s All Right
Veteran DIY duo Shellshag grace their hometown with another show tonight, and opening is Wisconsin noise pop duo The Hussy and local garage rockers Sharkmuffin.

The Do, Tomboy @ Bowery Ballroom
Franco-Finnish synthpop duo The Dø released their new album, Shake Shook Shaken, back in February, which further refines the band’s mix of acoustic instruments and synthesizers, leaning a little more on the latter this time. Note: the Tomboy on this bill is the Brooklyn dance duo, not the punk-ish band from Massachusetts.

Femi Kuti (and The Positive Force) @ Brooklyn Bowl
The eldest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, Femi is a great musician in his own right, having made records since the late ’70s and is equally dedicated to social/political activism.

Algiers, The Flag @ Baby’s All Right
Algiers just released their self-titled debut album via Matador which showcases their gothy, gospel-inflected, politically minded sound.

Goldlink, DJ Kidd Marvel, Chaz French @ SOB’s
Fresh off being named an XXL Freshmen, Virginia rapper GoldLink wraps up his 2-night stand in NYC tonight.
