Ty Segall

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Ty Segall, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Christian Peslak, @ Baby’s All Right
Ty Segall takes NYC with only his acoustic guitar, playing four sold-out shows this week. Will people still try to crowd surf? Tonight’s should be good, with an acoustic set from King Gizzard who…

…will then play a late-night electric set which has promised “special guests.” If you don’t have to wake up early, it’s worth catching them here.

Rhett Miller, Nicole Atkins @ City Winery
Whether with Old 97’s, his solo band, or just an acoustic guitar, Rhett Miller has the songs, the humor and the magnetic stage presence to charm.

Seoul, Heathers, Very Fresh @ Elvis Guesthouse
Montreal trio Seoul released their debut album, I Become a Shade, last week. If you haven’t checked it out, it’s lush synthpop that’s sort of a modern update of the chilled-out, sophisti-pop sounds of ’80s acts like The Dream Academy, China Crisis or Blue Nile. They celebrate the LP’s release tonight.

Mail The Horse, Rivergazer @ Knitting Factory
Mail the Horse released their new album, Planet Gates, this week, a record that’s embued with an early ’70s rock n’ roll spirit, be it the twangy leanings of the Stones and the Kinks during that time, or the gritty street life of Lou Reed. Tonight’s the release show.

Leon Bridges @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Looking and sounding like he was transported straight from 1961, Leon Bridges has made a helluva “classic” R&B style record with Coming Home, his debut album.

BBQ (Mark Sultan), The Mystery Lights @ Union Pool
Having reverted to his BBQ moniker, Mark Sultan is a one man garage band that’s always impressive to watch. Few solo performers could follow the wild fury that is The Mystery Lights, but BBQ is one of them.

John Fogerty @ Radio City Music Hall
1969 was a pretty great year for John Fogerty, whose band Creedence Clearwater Revival put out not one, not two, but three now-classic albums in that same year (Bayou County, Green River and Willy and the Poor Boys). He’ll be celebrating the material from those albums (as well as other favorites from throughout his career) tonight.

Pete Rock, Smoke DZA, Slum Village, Termanology,, Camp Lo, Sean Price, Das Efx, Large Professor, Royal Flush @ Brooklyn Bowl
Hip hop legend Pete Rock celebrates his new Petestrumentals 2 album at this show, and there’s a pretty amazing group of guests scheduled to appear, from fellow vet Sean Price to relative newcomer Smoke DZA and plenty more.

Darkest Hour, Dead to Fall, Beyond Dishonor, Oath @ Gramercy Theatre
DC’s Darkest Hour were one of the many bands to come of the metalcore/melodeath crossover of the late ’90s/early ’00s, and this year they’re celebrating the 10th anniversary of their 2005 breakthrough record, Undoing Ruin, by playing it in full on tour. Their ’00s-era Victory labelmates Dead to Fall (who broke up in 2008) are also back together to open.

Big Eyes, Vacation, Pretty Pretty, Flykills @ Shea Stadium
If you’re into punk with great hooks but not at the expense of the genre’s raw power, Big Eyes and Vacation are two of the better newer bands doing that sort of thing. This should be a good show.

Robert Glasper Trio @ Blue Note Jazz Club
As part of the Blue Note Jazz Festival, jazz/hip hop pianist Robert Glasper is doing four nights at the Blue Note (6/24-27). His albums are loaded with guests like Common, Jill Scott, Brandy, Snoop Dogg, Lupe Fiasco, Norah Jones, Bilal and more.

Loudon Wainwright III @ SubCulture
Loudon wraps up a four-week residency where he’s performing Surviving Twin, a posthumous collaboration in which he combines and connects some of his best songs with the writing of his late father Loudon Wainwright Jr.

The Kooks, Atlas Genius, Joywave @ Central Park Summerstage
Having racked up a string of guitar pop hits in the UK, Brighton’s The Kooks headline Summerstage tonight.
