Thee Oh Sees, Zs, OCDPP @ Warsaw
Coming off their strongest album in a while, Mutilator Defeated at Last, Thee Oh Sees bring their new(ish) two drummer lineup to NYC for the second of three shows with Zs.
The Juan Maclean, Essaie Pas, Heidemann @ Bowery Ballroom
Fresh off a European tour, the Juan Maclean (featuring a hot four-piece lineup, including some rad theremin use) play their first of two NYC shows tonight.
Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars @ Brooklyn Bowl
Celebrating their 10th anniversary, this band — who met in Guinea while fleeing in their native country — have turned tragedy into powerful, often joyous music.
CIV, Grey Area, Crown of Thornz, Too Many Voices @ Marlin Room at Webster Hall
Before heading to Chicago for Riot Fest this weekend, Civ’s post-Gorilla Biscuits band CIV will make a rare hometown appearance and it’s a good bill all around. Fellow ’90s-era New York band Grey Area provide direct support, and there’s also Danny Diablo’s band Crown of Thornz and ex-The Last Crime band Too Many Voices.
Little Wings, Weyes Blood @ Rough Trade
Little Wings (aka Kyle Field) has been making lo-fi folk for a while now, and he sounds good as ever on his new album Explains which is out now on Woodsist. Powerhouse singer Weyes Blood makes this a great double bill.
Toxic Holocaust, Lord Dying, Iron Force, Mauler @ Saint Vitus
Portland thrashers Toxic Holocaust haven’t put out a new album since 2013 but they have no lack of quality material to hit us with tonight. Their neighbors and Relapse labelmates Lord Dying (whose new album was produced by Toxic Holocaust frontman Joel Grind) are just as worth catching.
Scott Rogowski, Budd Mishkin, Adam Resnick, Mo Rocca @ Le Poisson Rouge
On this edition of live talk show “Running Late with Scott Rogowski,” Scott will be talking with NY1’s Budd Mishkin, comedy writer and Get a Life co-creator Adam Resnick, and comedy/TV-personality Mo Rocca.
The Orb, Michna Music Hall of Williamsburg
Dub chillout pioneers The Orb have been providing the soundtrack to some people’s comedown for 25 years now. With a new album, Moonbuilding 2703 AD, under their belts, be ready for liftoff. This is their first of two shows.
Tomorrow’s Tulips, Gingerlys, Green Pages @ Shea Stadium
Costa Mesa, CA trio Tomorrows Tulips make lo-fi indiepop with a flower power bent, and have records out on the Burger Label. Tonight’s a good show all-around with shoegazy indiepoppers Gingerlys and Green Pages (ex German Measles/Beets).
Beirut @ The Bell House
With their new album, No No No, out tomorrow, Beirut are playing it in full tonight as part of NPR’s All Song’s Considered Live series. It’s a free show but you had to RSVP.
John Hodgman @ Union Hall
John Hodgman, who seems to be on every decent comedy series on TV these days, is heading out on a tour called “Vacationland” this weekend. Before he leaves, he’s playing two warm-up shows in Brooklyn. This one, in Union Hall’s tiny downstairs, is unsurprisingly sold out.
Marty Friedman, Exmortus, Metalfier @ Gramercy Theatre
Since leaving Megadeth, Marty Friedman has become a very popular shred guitarist in his current home country of Japan. Now he’s finally back in the USA for his first tour here since 2003.
Palmistry @ Union Pool
London producer Benjy Keating has been putting out material under the Palmistry moniker, as well as collaborating with Triad God, Dracula Lewis, Sunless ’97 and Felicita since 2011. If you dig the futuristic pop of PC Music or SOPHIE (who contributed to his 2013 single “Catch”) but want something a little less novelty, Palmistry will probably be right up your alley.
Darude @ Cielo
The guy who wrote “Sandstorm” is playing NYC tonight. That is all.
