Empress Of
The Warriors

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Neil Fest @ Bowery Ballroom
The undeniable music legend Neil Young will be celebrated at Bowery Ballroom tonight and tomorrow by an all-star cast. His songs will be performed by recent tourmate Norah Jones, Ryan Adams, Sharon Van Etten, Kim Gordon’s band Body/Head, Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney, Gaslight Anthem singer Brian Fallon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner, and many more. Both shows are sold out.

The Warriors Festival w/ Sick of It All, Gotham City Mashers @ Coney Island
CAN YOU DIG IT??? It’s the all-day celebration of 1979 cult classic The Warriors happening, as it should, out in Coney Island. The event will feature a reunion of some of the cast and crew, a cosplay event, and of course a screening of the film with a post-screening Q&A with much of the cast and crew hosted by John Joseph of Cro-Mags. There’s music too, including NYHC veterans Sick Of It All, who still put on pulverizing shows.

Empress Of, Abra @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Empress Of, aka Lorely Rodriguez, released her debut album on Friday. She produced the album herself — the album’s titled Me — and it’s an impressive collection of modern, danceable pop. Tonight’s the record release show.

Moon Duo, Soldier of Fortune, Elisa Ambrogio @ Mercury Lounge
Few bands today are as good as locking onto a groove and riding it all the way as Bay Area droners Moon Duo. (They call it “Repeat-o-Rock.”) In town for two shows (this is the second), they play with NYC indie rock supergroup Soldiers of Fortune which includes members of Oneida, Chavez, Endless Boogie, Home and more.

Avi Buffalo, Jesus Jim, TORANAVOX @ Palisades
We thought Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg had retired the Avi Buffalo moniker (he’s part of an electronic duo called Lintronix these days) but here he is playing this matinee show. We’re guessing he’ll be playing solo, but you’ll have to go to find out.

Tall Juan, Golden Animals, The Jeanies, Ben Katzman’s Degreaser @ Shea Stadium
This is the record release show for Tall Juan’s “Falling Down” 7″ as well as the kickoff show for his tour.

Bushwig Fest @ Onderdonk House
Basically the new Wigstock, Bushwig is a celebration of drag culture and music happening at the historic (and surprisingly bucolic) Onderdonk House in Ridgewood. Today’s performances include No Bra and a late day performance by Mr. Twin Sister..

Steve Ignorant with Paranoid Visions, Bikini Carwash @ Gramercy Theatre
Punk as we know it probably wouldn’t be the same without Steve Ignorant, one of the key members of Crass. Back in 2013 he released a collaborative EP with ’80s-era Irish punks Paranoid Visions, and tonight they team up again on stage.

Liturgy, Sir Richard Bishop, Kill Alters, JG Thirlwell (DJ) @ Trans-Pecos
Liturgy’s newest album The Ark Work uses clean vocals and abandons most of their metal traits (besides blastbeats), and the result is a pretty great art rock album. Today they play this afternoon show (1 PM start).

Circuit Des Yeux, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Jon Porras @ Saint Vitus
Haley Fohr released the first full-band album for her art pop project Circuit des Yeux this year, and the result is some of her best stuff yet. Tonight’s lineup is good all around with Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (aka Lichens) and Jon Porras of Barn Owl.

Antarctigo Vespucci, Hiccup, Adult Mom, Spraynard, The Weaks @ Riis Park Beach Bazaar
It’s another afternoon of music on the beach, and today’s lineup is pretty great all around. Headlining is Jeff Rosenstock and Chris Farren’s collaborative band Antarctigo Vespucci, and there’s also pop punk from the Chris Gethard Show House Band-related Hiccup (like the Ramones kind) and Spraynard (like the Lifetime kind), plus singer/songwriter Adult Mom and Weezer-y rockers The Weaks.

Human Eye, Honey, Cyanide Tooth, Moral Panic @ Alphaville
Detroit’s Human Eye make wild garage punk that’s probably going to be a hell of a time in a small place like Alphaville. Local psych rockers Honey are worth showing up for too.

Tits of Clay, ARMS @ Rough Trade
The current backing band for the ongoing Broadway version of Hedwig & the Angry Inch also plays shows around NYC as Tits of Clay. The various Hedwigs have been known to appear with them, so maybe that means Taye Diggs will be in the house tonight.
