Empress Of

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Empress Of, Moses Sumney, special guest @ Baby’s All Right
Baby’s All Right has now been a venue for two full years and it’s celebrating its second birthday party tonight. They’ve got art pop artist Empress Of, whose new album Me is seriously good, her Terrible Records labelmate Moses Sumney, and a special guest.

Beyonce, Jay-Z, Prince, Usher, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, T.I., Damian Marley, Indochine, Thomas Rhett, Fabolous, Benjamin Booker, Alessia Cara, Flatbush Zombies @ Barclays Center
TIDAL is presenting this show which is ridiculously stacked, from legends (Prince) to future legends (Beyonce, Jay Z, etc) to rising up and comers (Benjamin Booker, Flatbush Zombies, etc).

Old 97’s @ Brooklyn Bowl
One of the bands to emerge from the ’90s, alt-country scene, Old 97’s are still a force today and frontman Rhett Miller maintains that youthful exuberance (and razor-sharp wit).

Joe Jackson @ Town Hall
Joe Jackson’s new album, Fast Forward, was originally conceived as a series of four EPs, each side of the double album was made in a different city with different musicians: New York, Amsterdam, Berlin and New Orleans. Be that as it may, it’s a cohesive record that shows Joe Jackson’s songwriting chops are still in fine form.

Leon Bridges, Kali Uchis @ Apollo Theater
Motown-inspired Texan Leon Bridges has blown up in short order thanks to his debut album that sounds like it coulda been made in 1964 and his energetic, charismatic live shows. This is his first of two sold-out shows in NYC this week and, given the history of the loction, should be something special.

Mark Knopfler @ Beacon Theater
Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler helped create a guitar sound that’s proved to be very influential (at least to The War On Drugs) and still sounds great today. Earlier this year he released a new album, Tracker.

Advance Base, Julie Byrne, Steve Sobs @ Silent Barn
Casiotone for the Painfully Alone’s Owen Ashworth now focuses on his Advance Base project, which released the new album Nephew in the Wild over the summer. Tonight he wraps up a 2-night stay in NYC with support from lo-fi folk singer Julie Byrne and Makonnen associate Steve Sobs.

Battles, Xenia Rubinos @ Webster Hall
Battles released their third (and first entirely instrumental) album La Di Da Di this year. They always find interesting ways to bring their music to life at shows, so tonight’s show is likely gonna be a good one. Good opener too.

Heaven’s Gate, Buck Gooter, Lushes, Jellowood, Meth Biker @ Alphaville
Brooklyn’s shoegazy rock outfit Heaven’s Gate headline this heavy night that also includes the industrial blues of Buck Gooter and more.

Hounds of Hate, NYC Headhunters, Impact @ The Acheron
Get your dose of brutal straight-edge hardcore from Brooklyn/Pennsylvania band Hounds of Hate at the Acheron tonight.

Daniel Bachman, Mary Lattimore @ Union Pool
American primitivism guitarist Daniel Bachman released the new album Miscellaneous Ephemera and Other Bullshit in August and will continue to support it with this show. Jeff Zeigler collaborator Mary Lattimore opens.

Cake Shop Comedy @ Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick. Tonight features ‘Last Week Tonight’ writer Kevin Avery, LA comic Marcella Arguello, and more.
