Sleater-Kinney

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Sleater-Kinney, Waxahatchee @ Terminal 5
Sleater-Kinney made a triumphant return this year, coming back after a ten-year hiatus with a killer new album and live shows that were electric as ever. They wrap up this year with five more NYC shows, starting tonight. Each has a different opener, and tonight it’s Waxahatchee, whose current 5-piece lineup is their best yet.

Zula, Swings, Two Inch Astronaut, Half Waif @ Baby’s All Right
Exploding In Sound labelmates Swings and Two Inch Astronaut are on tour together, and hitting NYC tonight with two quality local bands. Two Inch just dropped a new single, which does a lot of justice to ’90s Dischord.

Dave Harrington & Friends Holiday Spectacular w/ members of The Antlers, Real Estate, APTBS, Yeasayer, Bear In Heaven, Tanlines & many more @ Le Poisson Rouge
Darkside’s Dave Harrington leads a house band that will play a number of holiday songs tonight with a pretty incredible list of guests. Last year there were some surprises too — will Mandy Patinkin show up agin?

Timeshares, Spill, Adult Dude, Straw Hats @ Shea Stadium
There’s a lot of cool stuff on this bill: twangy punks Timeshares, the new band from Placeholder/We Were Skeletons members Spill, and the Dino Jr-ish Adult Dude.

Birthmark @ Rough Trade
Birthmark is the solo project of Nate Kinsella (of Joan of Arc, American Football, etc), but his new album is closer to bright art pop than any of his other bands. Tonight’s the release show.

Steve Earle, Justin Townes Earle, The Mastersons @ City Winery
This is the rehearsal for Steve Earle and his son Justin’s autism benefit at Town Hall tomorrow. Austin duo The Mastersons play as well. Sold out.

Yuppicide, Urban Waste, Ice Cold Killers, Close To The Edge @ The Grand Victory (3 PM)
NYC punk vets returned this year with their first album since 1995, which has their punk/hardcore/ska blend sounding as ferocious as ever. Today’s the release show.

Des Ark, Pygmy Lush @ Union Pool
Des Ark’s Feist-y new album Everything Dies is a nice mix of dark folky songs and piano ballads. It should blend well with folk/post-rock collective Pygmy Lush, who are on first.

Yoshimio/Ryan Sawyer/Hisham Bharoocha/Shahzad Ismaly, Highlife (Doug Shaw), DJ Dutch E Germ @ Max Fish
Boredoms’ Yoshimio is in the midst of her five collaborative NYC shows, this being the third. Tonight’s set has her playing as a four-piece with Hisham Bharoocha and Shahzad Ismaly.

Invisible Familiars @ Ace Hotel
New York singer songwriter Jared Samuel, who has played with Martha Wainwright, Sharon Jones, Cibo Matto and Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger to name a few, makes his own quirky, poppy and danceable music as Invisible Familiars. This is part of his December residency which happens every Sunday this month at Ace Hotel. Live music starts at 10 PM.

Powerhouse feat. Sasheer Zamata, Ophira Eisenberg, Corn Mo, Jo Firestone, Reformed Whores & more @ Union Hall
Aaron Glaser hosts this variety show with house band, Big City and a bevy of special guests.
