What’s going on Saturday? (Tess Parks, Krallice, Antietam, I Am the Avalanche, Two Inch Astronaut, Smithereens, more)
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...
Tess Parks, LODRO, Heavy Birds @ Baby's All Right
Is your favorite Brian Jonestown Massacre song is "Anenome," the groovy Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request track that featured lead vocals by Mara Keagle? If so, you're likely gonna dig I Declare Nothing, a new album by Canadian singer Tess Parks made with BJM domo Anton Newcombe. While Tess' voice leans a little more towards Courtney Love's rasp than Keagle's smoky coo, there's a very similar vibe going on here.
Skaters, Drew Citron (of Beverly), Alex Levine (of So So Glos), Carlos (of Bikes in the Kitchen) (all DJ sets) @ McCarren Hotel & Pool
The So So Glos are throwing a new free monthly party at McCarren Hotel & Pool with DJ sets from 10 PM to 2 AM. This is the first one.
I Am The Avalanche, Timeshares, Make War @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Movielife's reunion is back in full force with continued touring plans and new music promised, but singer Vinnie Caruana isn't abandoning his other band I Am the Avalanche. This is their first show with their original lineup in two years (rescheduled from 1/23 because of the storm). Timeshares are worth catching too.
Krallice, Yellow Eyes, Acme String Trio @ Saint Vitus
Experimental black metal band Krallice have been on a roll lately, with last year's great Ygg Huur followed by the even better Hyperion EP on New Year's Day. Needless to say, there's a lot to look forward to tonight.
Florist, Long Beard, Vagabon, Yours Are The Only Ears @ Shea Stadium
Local lo-fi pop artist Florist celebrate their new album The Birds Outside Sang at this show. It's especially worth catching the slowcore-ish Long Beard too.
Flagland, Two Inch Astronaut, Cheap Dinosaurs, Infinity Girl, Stove @ Palisades
Two Inch Astronaut make post-hardcore that hearkens back to the mid-'90s Dischord era. They particularly sound a bit like Shudder to Think. Their new record Personal Life just hit the web, and now they're in NYC to support it.
Physical Therapy, UMFANG, Doss, Negative Gemini @ Palisades
There's plenty of good electronic music on this bill, and it's worth getting there early for alt-pop artist Negative Gemini.
Silent Servant, Bill Converse, Jahiliyya Fields, FORMA @ Market Hotel
This is the first Bunker party at Market Hotel and, with no snow in the forecast, may the party commence.
Antietam, Speed The Plough, Heroes of Toolik @ Union Hall
Both Antietam and Speed the Plow have been NYC indie rock staples for 30 years. Catch a little bit of history tonight.
The Smithereens @ B.B. King's
The Smithereens first two albums are bona-fide '80s alt-rock classics, with hits like "Blood and Roses," "House We Used to Live In" and "Behind the Wall of Sleep." The band are still making great classic-style pop.
Buster Pointdexter @ Cafe Carlyle
New York Doll singer David Johansen puts back on the tux and his party-friendly Buster Poindexter persona for a night of saucy cabaret at this fancypants supper club.
