Best Coast

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Best Coast, Wavves, Cherry Glazerr @ Terminal 5
The last time Best Coast and Wavves toured together, they were both lo-fi bands with an affinity for the sun, the beach, and cats on their album covers. Now they’re doing it again, but this time both are major label bands with polished recordings and they work way too hard to be called “slacker rock.” Cherry Glazerr make it a good triple bill all around.

“Gender Is Over!” benefit w/ SPECIAL GUEST, David Dondero (of Sunbrain), Lauren Denitzio (of Worriers) @ Silent Barn
Silent Barn hosts a Gender is Over! (If You Want It) benefit tonight, and going by major Gender Is Over supporter Laura Jane Grace‘s recent Instagram post, it seems safe to assume she’s the headliner.

Ra Ra Riot @ Rough Trade
Ra Ra Riot have a different lineup these days and their best years are possibly behind them, but they’re still going strong and releasing the new album Need Your Light this week. Ahead of their Webster Hall show in March, they play this 7 PM in-store tonight. You have to purchase the album from Rough Trade to get in.

The Soft Moon, Yvette @ Baby’s All Right
If you dig goth and industrial and don’t have to get up early tomorrow, this post-midnight show featuring two terrific and intense bands.

Eleanor Friedberger, Big Thief, Icewater @ Bower Ballroom
Eleanor Friedberger’s third solo album New View came out a few weeks back and, like its two predecessors, it has Eleanor offering classic pop songwriting in favor of the quirkier sounds she made in Fiery Furnaces. She celebrates its release tonight. Her backing band, Icewater, opens the show and don’t miss Big Thief who just signed with Saddle Creek.

Heaven, Cosmicide, The Vandelles, Drawing Boards, Willows @ Pianos
Miss mid-’00s band Secret Machines? Check out Brandon Curtis’ new group Cosmicide who don’t stray too far from his old band’s widescreen, post-punky rock. This is the third week of their Pianos residency and maybe has the best overall lineup with pals Heaven, and new Brooklyn band Drawing Boards (featuring members of Dirty on Purpose, Darlings and Sisters).

Katie Ellen, Strangepride, Jeff Riddle & The Bella Vista Social Club, John-Paul Carrillo @ Tiger Lounge
Chumped are sadly no more, but half the band (including singer Anika Pyle) are continuing on as Katie Ellen, which so far pretty much picks up as a more lo-fi version of where Chumped left off.

Seu Jorge @ Blue Note
Best known here in America for acting in City of God and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (which he scored using only acoustic, Portuguese David Bowie covers), but Brazilian artist Seu Jorge has been making music since the ’90s. This is part of his 10-night run at the Blue Note.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s finally putting it to bed, but not before this six-week run.

Jerry Seinfeld @ Beacon Theatre
What’s the deal with these shows? Jerry Seinfeld continues his monthly residency at Beacon Theater tonight, that’s what.

For laughs, check out the NYC Comedy calendar too.
