You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...
Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Gold Star @ Brooklyn Steel
'90s indie rock poster boy Stephen Malkmus released one of his best solo album, Sparkle Hard, last year which found him dialing down the obtuse irony and speaking from the heart...just a touch. He's got an "electronic" album out later this year, maybe he'll break out the synthesizer tonight.
Kacey Musgraves, Natalie Prass @ Beacon Theatre
Kacey Musgraves released her best album yet (and one of the best of 2018) with Golden Hour, which takes her usual country sound in a more psychedelic, more pop direction. She's on tour now with Natalie Prass (good pairing), and they've been covering "I Will Survive" together on stage. This is their first of two consecutive Beacon Theatre shows.
Petal, Sir Babygirl, Cave People @ Rough Trade
Scranton, PA indie rocker Petal released her very solid album Magic Gone on Run For Cover last year, and now she's on tour with rising alt-pop singer Sir Babygirl and another Scranton indie rock band, Cave People.
Radar State (The Get Up Kids/The Anniversary), Desert Sharks, Ageist @ Saint Vitus
Radar State is the supergroup of Get Up Kids co-frontmen Matt Pryor and Jim Suptic and The Anniversary frontman Josh Berwanger, and their debut album Strays sounds more like '90s Get Up Kids than anything TGUK have done since that decade. If you're a fan of that kinda stuff, tonight's sure to be very fun.
Free Time, Business of Dreams, Corduroy @ Alphaville
Corey Cunningham has been in a number of groups over the years, probably best known for Bay Area buzzsaw pop practitioners Terry Malts (who splintered out of Magic Bullets), and he’s now a member of Mike Krol’s band. On his own, however, he makes music as Business of Dreams, a solo project steeped in the indiepop traditions that run through The Smiths and New Order, Sarah Records bands like The Field Mice, Flying Nun groups like The Bats, Australia’s The Go-Betweens, and beyond.
Madball, Death Before Dishonor @ House of Independents
NYHC vets Madball are on the road with Boston's Death Before Dishonor, hitting Asbury Park tonight and Queens tomorrow.
Vijay Iyer Sextet @ Jazz Standard (two shows)
Modern jazz great Vijay Iyer’s latest album as a bandleader was 2017’s excellent Far From Over, his first with a sextet. That sextet is in the midst of a run at Jazz Standard, playing two shows a night.
Damien Rice @ Town Hall (two shows)
Singer-songwriter Damien Rice plays two Town Hall shows today, and at the early show (5 PM) he'll "play a collection of new songs and take a selection of questions from the audience.”
Les Savy Fav, Acid Dad @ Junction
Known for their utterly bananas live shows, Les Savy Fav don't play very often anymore. They play the annual Shine A Light benefit in Long Island tonight (and will be at Brooklyn's Elsewhere on Saturday).
Tall Juan, Honduras, Chorizo @ Market Hotel
If you dig garage rock, here's a very solid triple bill, with TalJuan and Honduras more on the psych side, and Chorizo bringing punk energy.
