What's going on Friday?

Uniform at Brooklyn Steel
Uniform @ Brooklyn Steel (more by Ester Segretto)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The National @ iHeartRadio Theater
The National’s great new album I Am Easy To Find is out today, and as The National tend to do, they’re celebrating it with an intimate release show in NYC. This one will stream live on iHeartRadio’s YouTube channel, and will feature a Q&A with the band led by iHeartRadio host Harms. The album is also full of guest stars — will any show up for this show?

The Dream Syndicate, 75 Dollar Bill, Stephen McCarthy @ Mercury Lounge
Leaders of the ’80s “paisley underground” movement, The Dream Syndicate’s ringing sound, which pulled more from Velvet Underground than the Byrds — still sounds great today. The reactivated band just released new album These Times and this intimate show — part of the Mercury Lounge’s 25th anniversary celebration — also has experimental duo 75 Dollar BIll and The Long Ryders’ Stephen McCarthy on the bill, making for a pretty great night.

Tacocat, Sammi Lanzetta, Control Top @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Seattle’s Tacocat got a little spiffier on their first album for Sub Pop, with just a touch of pop sheen added to their fun, feminist indie rock sound. If you’re going tonight, definitely get their early to see openers Control Top.

Roy Ayers, Love Injection @ Elsewhere Rooftop
Everybody loves the sunshine so what better place to see vibe master Roy Ayers than on a roof? Roy ushers in Elsewhere’s first rooftop weekend of the season.

Rooftop Films Opening Night w/ Nadah El Shazly @ Green-Wood Cemetery
Rooftop films kicks off it’s 2019 season with its annual “This is What We Mean By Short Films” program.

Uniform, Wear Your Wounds, Blame Gods @ Saint Vitus
Converge frontman J Bannon’s Wear Your Wounds project has evolved from a solo project into a full band, and they recently released the first single off their first full-band album, which is very promising. They’re on the road now with NYC noisecore trio Uniform, which is an awesome pairing.

Black & Blue Pre-Bowl Diablo Fest w/ M.O.P., Skarhead & more @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Annual NYC hardcore fest Black & Blue Bowl is this weekend, but first Danny Diablo is throwing this pre-fest show with his band Skarhead, Brooklyn rap vets M.O.P., and more.

Onyx Collective ft. Kelsey Lu, John Benitez Salsa Band, Pretty Sick @ East River Park Amphitheater
Red Bull Music Festival continues tonight with local genre-defying jazz collective Onyx Collective, who will be joined by guests “who specialize in hip-hop, soul, and R&B.” Among the guests is cellist Kelsey Lu, whose debut album is one of 2019’s finest.

Broken Social Scene, Dave Hill @ Webster Hall
Toronto indie rock greats just released a new EP and they’ve still got that power to make you swoon. Their second of three Webster Hall shows.

Dehd, Gustaf, Patio @ Union Pool
Chicago’s Dehd, which includes members of the recently broken-up NE-HI, just release the very good album Water, and play tonight with two quality Brooklyn bands, including their Fire Talk labelmates Patio.

Mr. Twin Sister, Ava Luna @ Warsaw
Mr Twin Sister’s 2018 album Salt is almost like a Sade album if it was co-produced by Jazzy B and Roni Size. It is sultry. It is sumptuous. It is made for dancing but it is also a great making-dinner album or walking around the city album. Nice thing: Mr Twin Sister are almost always better live than on record, too.

Oneida, James Brandon Lewis, Val Jeanty, Reg Bloor @ Littlefield
Part of Littlefield’s 10th Anniversary Week, Brooklyn indie rock stalwarts Oneida

Angelo De Augustine, Ada Lea, Renata Zeiguer @ The Park Church Co-Op
Angelo De Augustine (who recently released a new album on Asthmatic Kitty) and Ada Lea (who just signed to Saddle Creek) both make intimate, folky, singer/songwriter music and they’re both perfect fits for a gorgeous venue like the Park Church Co-Op. Local dream pop artist Renata Zeiguer is worth catching too.

Bars Of Gold, LAPeCHE @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
The Bear vs Shark reunion seems to be over (or at least on pause), but Bear vs Shark offshoot Bars of Gold are back with a great new album and their tour hits NYC tonight. Support comes from LAPeCHE, who are also gearing up to open part of the Jawbox reunion tour.

mewithoutYou, Cursive, The Appleseed Cast @ White Eagle Hall
This is a pretty amazing bill for fans of late ’90s / early ’00s emo/post-hardcore/indie rock crossover, with three veteran bands who put out classic albums during that era and still make worthy new music today too. The tour hit NYC last night and now hits Jersey City tonight.

The Slackers, Big Tunes, The Hempsteadys @ The Kingsland
NYC ska vets The Slackers have been going strong since the early ’90s and they’ve remained a prolific band both live and in the studio. They’re gracing their hometown with a three-night stand at The Kingsland this weekend, beginning tonight.

Pete Rock, The Rub @ Analog BKNY
Hip hop as we know it wouldn’t be the same without Pete Rock, and he remains active as both a DJ and a producer today. Any chance to see him is worth taking.

Tourist, Griffin Camper (DJ Set) @ Industria
Electronic pop artist Tourist, who released a new album back in February, plays this show as part of the Masters of Design Conference.

Thick, Wild Yaks, Maggie Carson @ Our Wicked Lady
Start your weekend on a roof with this triple bill of local indie rock, including Epitaph-signed Thick.

Balun, Salt Cathedral @ National Sawdust
Brooklyn-via-Puerto-Rico electronic pop band Balun will be debuting new songs tonight.

Binky Griptite, Max Pain and The Groovies, Champagne SuperChillin @ The Broadway
Dap Kings bandleader Binky Griptite heads up this fun, diverse show at the The Broadway (formerly The Gateway) with garage rockers Max Pain & The Groovies, and the suave, frenchy sounds of Champagne Superchillin.

Aziz Ansari @ BAM
Comedian Aziz Ansari is playing three nights at BAM on his “Road to Nowhere” tour.
