Stereolab, Bitchin Bajas @ Brooklyn Steel
It’s been 11 years since Stereolab last played NYC and the groop’s reunion tour pulls into Brooklyn Steel for two sold-out shows, the being the first.
Billy Bragg @ Bowery Ballroom
Billy Bragg’s current tour, One Step Forward, Two Leaps Back, takes its name from his song “Waiting for the Great Leap Forwards” and has him doing three nights in each city. Tonight’s the first the two leaps back, playing first three LPs (Life’s a Riot With Spy Vs. Spy, Brewing Up With Billy Bragg, and Talking With the Taxman About Poetry) in full.
Massive Attack @ Radio City
Trip hop icons Massive Attack bring their Mezzanine XXI tour to NYC for two nights at Radio City. They’re playing all of Mezzanine — but not in running order — and of course Cocteau Twins’ Liz Fraser will be in the house for her songs on album, not to mention Horace Andy and amazing visuals.
Guided By Voices @ Industry City
The 2019 Industry City Summer Series comes to a close this weekend and tonight’s penultimate show is sure to be a beer-fueled marathon of windmill riffing, karate kicks and indie rock anthems…aka a Guided by Voices show.
Madball, Wisdom In Chains, Sworn Enemy, Apparition, Silence Equals Death @ The Kingsland
NYHC vets Madball still put on shows that get totally nuts, and punk shows at The Kingsland are usually nuts in general, so their two-night stand there this week should be as killer as you’d hope. Cro-Mags JM were supposed to open but had to cancel their tour dates.
Chris Forsyth, Ryley Walker, Daniel Carter @ Nublu 151
Chris Forsyth’s Nublu residency wraps tonight with fellow jammy indie rocker Ryley Walker and free-jazz saxophonist Daniel Carter. Great bill all around.
Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Maggie Rose @ Prudential Center
Heart and Joan Jett have been going strong since the ’70s and their live shows both remain killer today. (Any chance to hear Ann Wilson belt it in person is a chance worth taking.) They’ve toured together before in recent years, and they’re doing so again now and hitting Newark tonight.
Every Time I Die @ Rocks Off Concert Cruises
This is night three of Buffalo metalcore vets Every Time I Die’s three-night run of Rocks Off Cruises. They said they practiced 100 songs before these shows, so you can probably expect them to change up the setlist. And at night one, in addition to playing Hot Damn in full, they debuted a new song. Maybe we’ll hear more new stuff tonight?
“A Night of Women Composers” @ National Sawdust
The music of Clara Schumann, Ellen Reid, Emma O’Halloran, Mary Lou Williams, Missy Mazzoli, Meredith Monk and Paola Prestini will be performed tonight by an impressive cast of musicians including Timo Andres, Rafiq Bhatia and Ian Chang, Arnold Geis, Nico Muhly, Naomi Louisa O’Connell, Samora Pinderhuges and Elena Pinderhughes, Alexandra Smither, Young People’s Chorus of New York City, National Sawdust Ensemble, and Nelson Patton.
The Hu @ Stone Pony
Mongolian folk metal band The Hu went viral after releasing some of their early videos, and earlier this month they put out their debut album and started their first-ever North American headlining tour. We caught them at Riot Fest, and the live show is the real deal.
Pinegrove, Boyscott, Derek Ted @ Webster Hall
Pinegrove recently signed to Rough Trade and put out a new single, and now they’re on tour and hitting the NYC-area for three shows this week. This one’s with dream pop-ish indie folkies Boyscott and singer/songwriter Derek Ted.
Snow Tha Product @ Gramercy Theatre
Having just played Elsewhere with Maliibu Miitch last night, San Jose rapper hangs around NYC and hits Gramercy tonight.
RL Grime, Baauer, Jackal @ Avant Gardner
As far as EDM-ish stuff goes, this is a pretty appealing triple bill.
Cerebral Rot, Fetid, Altar of Gore, Oxalate, Calcified @ Saint Vitus
Two Seattle death metal bands and 20 Buck Spin labelmates, Cerebral Rot and Fetid, are bringing their brutality on tour together and hitting Vitus tonight. Both have recent albums, Odious Descent Into Decay and Steeping Corporeal Mess, respectively.
Dressy Bessy, Big Eyes, Kevin Hairs @ ALPHAVILLE
Denver’s Dressy Bessy have been making bubblegum flavored punk for 20 years and are still going stong, having recently released Fast Fast Disaster.
PIG, Cyanotic, A Primitive Evolution @ Saint Vitus Bar
Raymond Watts has played in KMFDM, Nine Inch Nails, and Einstürzende Neubauten and other industrial bands and makes a racket on his own as PIG.
Drahla, Russian Baths @ Rough Trade
Leeds-based post-punk-influenced trio Drahla released Useless Coordinates back in the spring that sounds like it could’ve come out of Berlin or Paris in 1979. Brooklyn’s Russian Baths make it a very good double bill.
Arca @ The Shed
Musician, producer, artist and Bjork collaborator Arca presents this “new, four-part experimental performance cycle titled Mutant;Faith.” This is Part 3: “Ripples.”
Graham Nash @ Town Hall
Tonight, the great Graham Nash will be playing his first two solo albums — 1971’s Songs for Beginners and 1973’s Wild Tales — in full, plus other favorites.
Juan Wauters @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Fomer Beets singer Juan Wauters brings a thoughtful lyrical worldview, and a Jonathan Richman type charm to his song, whether he’s singing in English or Spanish.
Daniel Avery, Rachel Noon @ Basement NY
Mute Records artist Daniel Avery, who toured with Nine Inch Nails earlier this year, will be performing in this newish techno-devoted club found in the basement of Knockdown Center.
Eliot Glazer’s Haunting Renditions @ Littlefield
Brother of Broad CIty’s Ilana Glazer (he played a fictionalized version on the show too), Eliot Glazer brings his classically trained musical skills (and his comedy chops) to this series where he takes pop songs and gives them the grandiose piano treatment. Franchesca Ramsey and Joyelle Nicole Johnson are guests tonight.
