What's going on Friday?

Julia Jacklin @ BVSXSW (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Hollis Brown, Julia Jacklin @ Berlin
Australian folk singer Julia Jacklin ahas a sound that’s not too far removed from Angel Olsen, and she’s about to release her debut album on the trusty Polyvinyl Records. She opens for Hollis Brown in NYC tonight.

Prophets of Rage, AWOLNATION @ PNC Bank Arts Center
While we’d love a Rage Against the Machine reunion tour, Prophets of Rage (which has that whole band minus Zack De La Rocha, plus members of Public Enemy and Cypress Hill) is at least kinda scratching that itch. They’re in NJ tonight, and they play Brooklyn tomorrow.

Sannhet, Wreck and Reference, Field Agent, Some Ember @ ALPHAVILLE
Flenser labelmates Sannhet and Wreck & Reference both make boundary-pushing music that’s both heavy and melodic (a lot of bands on that label do), and it should be a nice treat to see them together.

Minihorse, Imaginary Tricks @ Pianos
Ypsilanti, Michigan’s Minihorse make pleasingly bummed out guitar pop in the grand tradition of Grandaddy, The Comas, or Ambulance LTD.

Pinegrove, Stolen Jars, Topaz Jones, Half Waif, Werebears, Cranes Are Flying, Shakai Monday @ Clearmountain Festival
This mini-festival brings together bands that got their start in Montclair, including one of the year’s best breakout indie rock bands, Pinegrove. The Brooklyn-based Half Waif, whose members all play in Pinegrove, are also very worth catching.

The Slackers @ Rocks Off Concert Cruises, Aboard The Liberty Belle – Pier 36
Ska vets The Slackers have been at it since the early ’90s, and they can’t stop won’t stop. Tonight you can party with them on a boat.

Gingerlys, TV Ugly, Spit, Dorota @ Cake Shop
Brooklyn’s shoegazy indiepop outfit Gingerlys are paired nicely tonight with Vancouver’s TV Ugly.

Evan Dando (of The Lemonheads) @ City Winery
That smoky voice and Dando’s many great songs still sound great today.

Honey Radar, Bronze Float, Plates of Cake, Other Colors @ Knockdown Center
Philadelphia band Honey Radar released Blank Cartoon earlier this year via What’s Your Rupture, which is packed with low-fi jams indebted to ’60s Britrock. (If you like Guided by Voices or late-’90s Lilys, it’s very much in the same vein.) The play tonight with Brooklyn baroque pop act Bronze Float and more.

The Walters, Caged Animals, The Symposium, Pop & Obachan @ Mercury Lounge
It’s been a while since Brooklyn’s Caged Animals released an album. We hear one is in the hopper — get the scoop tonight.

Vanessa Bayer, Jonah Bayer, Joe Pera, Erik Bergstrom, Bridey Elliot @ The Bell House
Part of Brooklyn Comedy Festival, Vanessa Bayer & Jonah Bayer review the series finale of the popular ’90s sitcom Blossom and discuss the episode with cast member Jenna Von Oy (a.k.a. Six) and SNL’s Kyle Mooney.

Zula, Janka Nabay, Sarah Kinlaw, Erica Eso, Ashcan Orchestra @ Trans-Pecos
Brooklyn psych-pop act Zula celebrate the release of their new album, Grasshopper, tonight as part of a varied bill that includes bubu singer Janka Nabay.

Lazer/Wulf, Chrome Over Brass, Dead Empires @ Saint Vitus
This bill has some cool stuff on the heavier side, including the one-man-band Chrome Over Brass (aka American NIghtmare drummer Alex Garcia-Rivera).

Somos, Free Throw, High Waisted, Adult Mom @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Somos really changed up their sound on this year’s First Day Back, which is part emo, part alternative rock, part downtempo pop, and more. It’s really good stuff, and great live too.

Woman, Musk, Martin Bisi @ Union Pool
Woman headline this bill, and NYC vet Martin Bisi is always worth catching, but we especially want to point out that the great Oakland psych/garage punks MUSK are in town.
