Sigur Ros @ Kings Theatre
Sigur Ros are currently on their first-ever tour without an opening act. Instead, the band will be doing two sets at each show, starting at 8:30 PM sharp each night. The shows will also be just the band without the string and brass sections they’ve had on recent tours, and they’re planning to debut new music on the tour. They’re also promising “new interpretations of old songs that haven’t been played in a very long time.” This is their third of three nights in NYC.
Beyonce @ MetLife Stadium
Beyonce’s new album Lemonade is not just her best yet, but one of the best albums of the year. It defies genre, each song is its own beast, and its message is powerful. Her live shows are of course a huge spectacle, and getting to hear Bey’s voice in person is a true thrill.
Titus Andronicus, Happiness @ Market Hotel
Titus Andronicus are a pretty big band now, but they still like to play small DIY venues, which they’ll do twice in NYC this weekend. This is the first.
Green Day @ Rough Trade
Sometimes it’s easy to forget, but Green Day were once a real-deal punk band, and this weekend in NYC, they’ll get back to their roots and play some small clubs. This is the first of two shows. Tomorrow they’re at the bigger (but still very small for them) Webster Hall.
Saint Vitus, The Skull, Witch Mountain @ Saint Vitus
While Wino is Saint Vitus’ most famous singer, their first two albums — recorded with Scott Reagers on vocals — are still doom metal classics. They’re back with Scott for this tour, which is a cool treat for fans of the early stuff.
Warpaint @ Warsaw
Warpaint recently returned with their new album Heads Up, which, aside from the fun danceable single “New Song,” is still psychedelic and anti-commercial-sounding. This is their first of two NYC shows this weekend.
Joan of Arc, Slam Section, Tarakaia @ Knitting Factory
The weirdest, artiest, and most prolific of all the Kinsella bands, Joan of Arc just announced that they’ll release a new album in January. Maybe we’ll get to hear some more new songs from it tonight.
Shamir, Waxahatchee, Mutual Benefit @ Industry City
The benefit show, which also features readings by Sadie Dupuis and others, is part of a larger four-day event called “Design on a Dime” which celebrates “Brooklyn design, art, and culture with 20 top interior designers.”
Andrew Bird (conversation and performance) @ Gramercy Theatre (New Yorker Festival)
Part of the 2016 New Yorker Festival, Andrew Bird will be in conversation with surgeon, author and public heath researcher Atul Gawande, and Andrew will also perform live
Jason Isbell (conversation and performance) @ Gramercy Theatre (New Yorker Festival)
Part of the New Yorker Festival, Isbell will perform live in addition to talking with technology/pop culture journalist John Seabrook.
Sunflower Bean, The Lemon Twigs, B Boys @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Two talented and young bands hit Bowery tonight, with Wire-esque openers B Boys.
Jacuzzi Boys, Las Rosas, Roya @ Baby’s All Right
With new album Ping Pong hot off the presses, Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys rip into Brooklyn tonight.
Vetiver, The Baird Sisters @ Union Pool
Folk rockers Vetiver are back in NYC in support of last year’s solid Complete Strangers. Meg Baird, who released an excellent album earlier this year with Heron Oblivion, teams with her sister Laura to open the show with a Baird Sisters set.
Candiria, Primitive Weapons, Cavallo @ Arlene’s Grocery
Genre-crossing NYC vets Candiria bridge the gaps between metal, punk, jazz, rap and more, and today they released their first album since returning from hiatus. Tonight they play their first show in a five-borough run.
Golden Suits (Fred of Department of Eagles), Wilder Maker @ Mercury Lounge
Golden Suits, aka Fred Nicolaus of Department of Eagles, released his latest album Kubla Khan today. As you may expect, it’s a nice dose of folk-pop.
OSHUN, I.O.D., Radamiz, Bohan Phoenix @ Baby’s All Right (midnight)
With a sound that’s part neo-soul, part hip hop, and an undeniable, highly-visual live show, OSHUN may be the best band in NYC right now. Any chance to catch them is a good one, like maybe tonight after midnight.
Fucked Up, Iron Chic, Somerset Thrower @ Amityville Music Hall
While Fucked Up are about to play NYC with Descendents, tonight you can catch them right outside the city at a Long Island show with local heroes Iron Chic. That’s quite a great pairing.
Louis CK (conversation) @ Acura at SIR Stage37 (New Yorker Festival)
Louis talks with New Yorker television critic Emily Nussbaum at this NYF event.
David Letterman (conversation) @ SVA Theatre (New Yorker Festival)
While he’s led a very fascinating life, it will probably be hard to steer conversation away from Dave’s beard tonight.
Dave Hill, Joe Pera, Julio Torres, Ana Fabrega @ Union Hall
This is Dave Hill’s “Super Horny Night of Comedy” where he “convinces some of his favorite New York comedians to join him in a dark basement to bring the people of Brooklyn the goddamn show of a lifetime.”
Kristin Kontrol hosting karaoke @ Alphaville
Sing your heart out at this group karaoke jam with Kristin Kontrol (you know, Dee Dee of Dum Dum Girls) at the controls.
