Emily Jane White, Foxtails Brigade @ Mercury Lounge (BV Presents)
Earlier this year, Emily Jane White released They Moved In Shadow All Together, a very good dark folk album that fans of Marissa Nadler and Chelsea Wolfe need to hear. This weekend, we’re thrilled to present two NYC shows that Emily’s playing, this being the first. Hope to see you there!
M83, Shura @ Terminal 5
M83 returned this year with Junk, a confusingly odd followup to their mainstream breakthrough Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, but still one with a handful of bangers. Tonight’s their first of two Terminal 5 shows this weekend with Shura.
Steely Dan with Rickie Lee Jones @ Beacon Theatre
Donald Fagen and Walter Becker are here for a 10-show run at Beacon Theatre. Some nights are full-album shows; others, like tonight, has Rickie Lee Jones joining them.
Preoccupations, Methyl Ethel @ Warsaw
While they will still probably be referred to as “formerly Viet Cong” for a bit longer, Preoccupations continue to sound vital — and are a live force.
DJ Shadow, Noer the Boy @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
With his first album in five years just out, DJ Shadow plays this show tonight. There are tons of guests on the LP, maybe a couple will show here.
Luscious Jackson, ADW Young @ The Bell House
Having reunited for a new album in 2013, NYC group Luscious Jackson have remained sporadically active since. This is their only show of 2016.
EZTV, Jacuzzi Boys, Omni, Power, Montero @ Baby’s All Right
It just doesn’t seem like October in NYC without CMJ. This is a taste of what could’ve been this year, with Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys, Atlanta’s Omni, two Australian bands (Power, Montero) and Brooklyn headliners EZTV.
Duchess Says, Future Punx, Operator Music Band, Peeling @ Shea Stadium
Montreal’s Duchess Says are a bonkers, bananas, must-see live act thanks to wild-eyed, firebrand singer Annie-Claude who never lets there be a passive audience at a show. Miss them at your peril, and tonight’s show is very solid, with tourmates Future Punx, motorik groop Operator Music Band, and Dilly Dally-related Peeling.
Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, Nap, Bad Bone, Road Dog, Somerset Thrower @ Alphaville
Australia’s jangly Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, who lived in NYC for a spell, are back in Melbourne these days and have a new album, Mid Thirties Single Scene, and are now back in NYC (as part of this tour).
Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, Amon Amarth, Metal Church, Butcher Babies @ Prudential Center
Between Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies and Metal Church, some of the best thrash metal songs ever written will be played tonight, not to mention there’s Swedish melodeath giants Amon Amarth and the lively Butcher Babies. Should be a fun show.
Conor Oberst @ Housing Works
Conor Oberst releases his new solo album Ruminations today. It’s the quietest album he’s made in forever, and a definite highlight in his career. Tonight he celebrates with this tiny release show, that you had to win tickets through NPR to get into.
Rhye, Cigarettes After Sex @ Webster Hall
Rhye still haven’t put out a followup to their Sade-ish 2013 debut LP Woman, but those songs still sound great and Rhye’s shows are pretty rare.
Discharge, Eyehategod (with Randy Blythe), Toxic Holocaust, Disassociate @ The Marlin Room at Webster Hall
British hardcore legends Discharge are the reason the D-beat genre exists, they’ve influenced Metallica — their impact is huge. They’re currently with a singer who joined two years ago, but this year’s End of Days still has them sounding pretty brutal. On the topic of bands without their usual singers, Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe is fronting Eyehategod for this tour. That’s kinda cool for someone as famous as him to do, but we’re not sure how many EHG fans wanna see them with Randy Blythe singing. Toxic Holocaust and the recently-reunited grindcore band Disassociate should be pretty ripping too.
Burn, 9 Lives, The Wilding Incident, Activator, Search @ Saint Vitus
Tons of bands that have gotten big in the past couple decades took influence from Burn (like for example, Deftones, who Burn opened for on tour last month), so it’s a real treat that we get to see this band back in action.
Bob Weir (w/ Bryan Devendorf, Scott Devendorf, Josh Kaufman, Steve Kimock, Jon Shaw) @ Kings Theatre
Bob Weir may have played much larger venues on his tour with John Mayer as a band member, but for indie rock fans, this lineup is a way more exciting way to see the Grateful Dead member. He’s joined by Bryan & Scott Devendorf of The National, who spearheaded a massive Dead tribute album earlier this year, and Josh Kaufman who plays on many songs on that album. There’s also longtime Weir collaborator Steve Kimock and Shakey Graves member Jon Shaw.
Mick Jenkins, Smino, Austin Millz @ Bowery Ballroom
Chance the Rapper’s Coloring Book may be the Chicago rap album that everyone is talking about this year, but Mick Jenkins’ The Healing Component is, in its own way, close to as good.
