What's going on Friday?

Kendrick Lamar at Weekend 2 of ACL Festival 2016
Kendrick Lamar @ ACL 2016 (more by Tim Griffin)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The Bouncing Souls, Off With Their Heads, Crazy and The Brains @ Irving Plaza
Consistently-great Jersey punks The Bouncing Souls returned this year with their tenth album, and they’ll wrap up 2016 with a three-night run at NYC’s Irving Plaza (presented by BrooklynVegan). Each night has different openers, and this one’s got anthemic punks Off With Their Heads and the xylophone-fueled Crazy and the Brains. This is night 2.

Kendrick Lamar @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Even in years where Kendrick Lamar doesn’t release a (proper) album, he still dominates rap, and 2016 was no different. Tonight he plays a VERY intimate show, presented by American Express, which is obviously sold out.

Jimmy Eat World, Prawn @ Stone Pony
Jimmy Eat World returned this year with Integrity Blues, their most consistently great album front-to-back since 2004’s Futures. They’re currently on tour with emo revivalists Prawn, who surely take some influence from Jimmy Eat World. Tonight they play Asbury Park and tomorrow they’ll play Webster Hall.

Taking Back Sunday, The Starting Line, Modern Chemistry @ Starland Ballroom
Taking Back Sunday made a turn towards heartland rock on this year’s Tidal Wave, but don’t worry, they still play the emo/pop punk favorites at their shows. Tonight they begin their two-day stand of holiday shows at Starland Ballroom.

Tengger Cavalry, Tungsten, Entropy, Goblin Hovel @ Saint Vitus
NYC-based Mongolian folk-metal band Tengger Cavalry’s live show is truly a sight to be seen, and you can see that sight tonight.

Tamaryn, Soren @ Baby’s All Right
Having spent a good portion of 2016 touring with Lush (a band whose sound clearly influenced her own), Tamaryn wraps up 2016 with this holiday show.

Louis CK @ Madison Square Garden
Louis CK has had an interesting year, dropping acclaimed series Horace & Pete on an unsuspecting world, while touring constantly. This is his second of two MSG shows this week.

Japanese Breakfast (solo), eskimeaux (solo), 100%, gobbinjr @ Shea Stadium
This is a great bill all around of solo sets from local indie songwriters, headlined by Japanese Breakfast, who released the very good Psychopomp this year. 100% is the solo project of Crying singer Elaiza Santos.

The Haxan Cloak (DJ), Show Me the Body, Via App, Geng, Moor Mother @ Knockdown Center
Show Me The Body’s residency continues tonight, and this one’s headlined by the great producer The Haxan Cloak, who’s worked with HEALTH, LUH, Bjork, and more. Experimental rapper Moor Mother plays this and also plays…

Moor Mother, KAG (aka Katie Alice Greer of Priests), Decisions @ Silent Barn (‘The Media’ open meeting)
…this Silent Barn show which doubles as an open meeting for ‘The Media.’. Priests singer Katie Alice Greer is doing a solo set at this too.

Breanna Barbara, Old Lady, Dances, Junk Boys @ Union Pool
Bluesy singer/songwriter Breanna Barbara released the swaggering Mirage Dreams earlier this year, and plays another hometown show tonight.
