What's going on Friday?

Brookzill

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

BROOKZILL! @ Blue Note
Somewhere between Brooklyn and Brazil lies BROOKZILL!, the highly enjoyable collaboration between producer Prince Paul, Digable Planets’ Ladybug Mecca and São Paulo MC Rodrigo Brandão. Take a nap before heading to this perhaps — doors for this late show are at midnight.

godheadSilo, Corey J Brewer @ Saint Vitus
Olympia, WA Noise duo godheadSilo were active in the ’90s and known for their terrifyingly loud live performances before breaking up in 1998. Now they’re back in action and playing NYC tonight.

The Early November, Hidden In Plain View @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
The Early November released two albums before going on their hiatus (which ended years ago and has since been followed with two more albums), the early ’00s emo staple The Room’s Too Cold and the more ambitious The Mother, the Mechanic, and the Path. The latter is a triple album, with each disc having its own sound and concept. It had harder rock, mellower Beatlesque songs, musical-inspired songs, and more, and incorporated string and horn arrangements. They’re celebrating its 10th anniversary on tour now, and they’re promising most of the songs from that album, plus other songs from the rest of their career.

‘Funeral Doom Spiritual’ w/ M. Lamar, Hunter Hunt-Hendrix @ National Sawdust (2 shows)
“Funeral Doom Spiritual” is a monodrama by NYC composer M. Lamar and Liturgy lead Hunter Hunt-Hendrix that “draws on themes of apocalypse, end times, and rapture found in Negro Spirituals, what Lamar calls ‘Doom Spirituals.'” They’re presenting the piece with two shows at National Sawdust tonight, that will have M. Lamar on vocals and piano, Hunter on electronics, and strings by The James Ilgenfritz Ensemble.

Forth Wanderers, Half Waif, Trace Mountains, Stolen Jars @ Baby’s All Right
On this bill we’re partial to Brooklyn’s Half Waif whose new EP of airy synthpop will be out in February via Cascine

Thick, The Mad Doctors, Breanna Barbara, The Rizzos, Milk Dick, Secret Nudist Friends, El Silver Cabs @ Shea Stadium
This is first night of the two-night ‘Pizzamania’ fest, featuring a slew of up-and-coming, mostly local bands.

Buster Poindexter @ City Winery NYC
New York Doll singer David Johansen puts back on the tux and his party-friendly Buster Poindexter persona for a night of saucy cabaret.

Strange Names, Miles Francis, Showtime (ft. Jen Goma) @ C’mon Everybody
Jem Goma has sung with A Sunny Day in Glasgow, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, People Get Ready and others, but Showtime is her baby. We haven’t seen Showtime yet, but Jen is very talented and we have high hopes.
