Bob Mould at Riot Fest Chicago 2016 - Saturday
Bob Mould at Riot Fest Chicago 2016 (more by James Richards IV)

What's going on Friday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Bob Mould (solo) @ City Winery
Bob Mould may be playing without a band tonight, but don’t think that means he won’t be loud. Expect a mix of solo, Sugar and Husker Du songs played at maximum volume.

Cock Sparrer, Judge @ Warsaw
UK punk legends Cock Sparrer’s influence can be heard all over a ton of today’s bands, and their classic material hasn’t lost a bit of its appeal. They play two Warsaw shows this weekend, both with great openers. This one (the first) has NYHC vets Judge, who also…

Judge @ Saint Vitus (midnight)
…play a midnight show at Vitus afterwards.

Hand Habits, John Andrews & The Yawns, Florist @ Baby’s All Right
Meg Duffy has been making music under the name Hand Habits for a couple years, while also playing stints in Mega Bog and Kevin Morby’s band. Her new album, Wildly Idle, just came out via Woodsist and is Sunday Morning music in the best possible way.

Drive-By Truckers @ The Space at Westbury
Long running countrified rockers Drive-By Truckers released American Band last year, a fiery polemic that tackles State of the Nation issues with gusto. Can’t imagine they’ve mellowed out since.

Pavo Pavo, Operator Music Band, Parrot Dream @ Trans-Pecos
Brooklyn experimental pop act Pavo Pavo travel in the same circles as San Fermin, Here We Go Magic, Roomful of Teeth, and Dave Longstreth, employing a particuarly airy sense of melody and harmony. The band’s debut album, Young Narrator In The Breakers, came out last year via Bella Union. Operator Music Band are the closest Brooklyn has to Stereolab.

Hudson Mohawke, Nadus, Sporting Life @ Output
Hudson Mohawke is a frequent producer for Kanye West, he handled the production on ANOHNI’s HOPELESSNESS (with Oneohtrix Point Never), he’s one half of TNGHT with Lunice, and he’s got a few of his great solo albums on Warp. He comes to Output tonight, with Newark producer Nadus and former Ratking member Sporting Life.

Talib Kweli, Styles P, K’Valentine @ Highline Ballroom
Veteran NYC rapper Talib Kweli graces his hometown with a show tonight, and it’s got a pretty stacked lineup: Styles P (of the back-in-action The LOX) and K’Valentine (who plays and collaborates with Talib a lot).

+/- {Plus Minus}, Jason Lowenstein, Flower @ Union Pool
Indie vets +/- took a break after 2008’s Xs on Your Eyes but returned in 2014 with Jumping the Tracks and they play shows every now and again. This is a night of veteran indie all around, with Sebadoh/Fiery Furnaces member Jason Lowenstein, and Flower, whose members Richard and Ed Baluyut went on to form Versus and are the brothers of +/- member James Baluyut (who also played in Versus).

White Denim, Ikebe Shakedown @ Brooklyn Bowl
Rootsy Austin rockers White Denim begin a two-night stand at Brooklyn Bowl tonight. Last year, they released Stiff.

GosT, Teeel (DJ Set), Anatomy, Black Table @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
The trend of metal-approved artists combining ’80s synthwave with John Carpenter-esque horror soundtracks continues, and one of the latest to get buzz is GosT.

Clique, Hodera, White Pisces @ Goldsounds
Last year, Philly band Clique released their new album Burden Piece on Topshelf, which fans of ’90s lo-fi indie rock may dig. They’re back in NYC tonight with Jersey’s Hodera and Brooklyn’s White Pisces (ex-Slow Warm Death, Street Smart Cyclist).

No Ice, Nine of Swords, Turnip King, Yaas Haus @ Babycastles
This is a diverse all-local bill with rock and rollers No Ice, hardcore rippres Nine of Swords, indie rockers Turnip King, and the soulful Madam West.
